Delaware’s Hot Outside Shooting Upends Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 17, 2025) … Delaware (4-10, 1-3) made 13 three-pointers and five players scored in double figures as the Blue Hens topped Hampton (4-12, 0-5) 79-69 before 955 fans at the Hampton Convocation Center. Delaware snapped a five-game losing streak and posted its first conference win of the year.

Aisha Dabo registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Arlisha Boston, who missed the last year due to injury, scored 11 points including a pair of three-pointers as Hampton mounted a fourth quarter comeback. Jasha Clinton scored 10 points for the Pirates and Casey Miller had eight points and six boards.

Five Blue Hen players scored double figures, led by Ella Wanzer, who finished with 20 points. Rebecca Demeke finished with 16, Michelle Ojo had 14, Chloe Wilson scored 12, and Tara Cousins had 11.

Delaware burned the nets in the game's opening minutes. The Blue Hens made their first six shots from the field including five three-pointers to lead 17-5 midway through the first quarter. The Blue Hens shot a torrid 66.7 percent from the field while limiting Hampton to 35.7 accuracy. Delaware doubled up Hampton 24-12 after the first quarter.

The two teams played on even terms to open the second quarter. The Blue Hens cooled off, shooting just 30 percent from the field in the first five minutes. But back-to-back Blue Hen treys made the score 39-23 under 3:00 to go. Delaware led by as many as 20 and made five of its last eight shots to end the half with a 45-27 advantage.  

The Blue Hens canned 8-of-11 three pointers while shooting 51.9 percent from the first in the opening half. Hampton was at 34.5 percent. Delaware scored 15 points off 11 Hampton turnovers. Hampton's Clinton, the Coastal Athletic Association's fifth leading scorer at 15.3 points per game, was held scoreless in eight minutes of action in the opening half.
Wanzer came off the bench to score 14 first half points for Delaware while teammates Demeke and Cousins scored eight points apiece. Dabo had seven points with five rebounds and Miller tallied six points for the Pirates.

Delaware opened the second half with a putback to up the lead to 47-27. Eventually, the lead grew to 22 early in the quarter. Hampton outscored the Blue Hens 22-21 in the third period led by Dabo who had eight points of her team-high 17 points. Clinton hit a trey toward the end of the quarter as the Pirates trailed 66-49 entering the final quarter.

After Delaware converted another three-pointer, Hampton reeled off 11 straight points to close the gap to 69-60 with 4:00 to left. Clinton and Boston each hit threes and a Dabo stickback spurred the comeback. Boston celebrated her birthday with a trey to make the score 73-66 with 1:26 to go. Another trey, the 13th of the game for the Blue Hens boosted the lead to 76-66 with 47 seconds left.

The Pirates return to action on Sunday, Jan. 19 when Hampton hosts Drexel at 2:00 p.m. at the Hampton Convocation Center.
