Josh Ogundele Leads Pirates to 74-68 Victory Over UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Nov. 25, 2025) … Hampton (3-5) led by as many as 17 points in the second half and made key free throws down the stretch to post a 74-68 triumph over longtime rival UMES (3-6) before a modest crowd at the Hytche Arena. It marked Hampton's eighth win in the last 10 meetings with the Hawks.

Josh Ogundele scored 17 points with a career-best 9-of-11 free throw shooting to lead the Pirates. Michael Eley (13 points), Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt (12) also tallied double-figures for Hampton. Xzavier Long finished with eight points and a game-high 11 boards in the win.

The Pirates shot 50 percent from the field and converted 25-of-33 from the line on the night. UMES was led by Zion Obanla who finished with 20 points while teammate Joseph Locandro had 18.

UMES jumped to a quick 5-0 advantage before the Pirates stormed back scoring 16 of the next 18 points to take a 16-7 lead with 13:21 left in the opening half. Eley tallied seven points during the stretch. Following a UMES free throw, the Pirates increased the lead to 16, 24-8, forcing a Hawks timeout with 8:23 left in the half.

The Pirates held a 39-28 lead at intermission. Ogundele led the way with eight points including 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Hampton shot 48 percent from the field and canned 5-of-11 three-pointers while converting 10-of-12 from the line.

The Pirates lead grew to as many as 17, 47-30, with 16:17 left on a Gaines-Wyatt field goal. Later, Hampton matched the lead on a dunk by Ogundele to make the score 53-46.

But a 21-8 UMES run closed the gap to 65-59 with 3:51 following back-to-back treys for the Hawks. The gap shrunk even further to 65-61 with 3:28 to go. An old fashioned three-point play by Long gave the Pirates a little breathing room, 68-61, at the 3:14 mark.

Coach Ivan Thomas's team made their free throws down the stretch to snap a three-game losing streak. Daniel Johnson made two free throws with 1:46 to go and Ogundele canned another two from the charity stripe at the 1:14 mark. Gaines-Wyatt made two free throws in the final 52 seconds to keep the Hawks at bay.

The contest with UMES was the final game of a stretch of six straight road contests for the Pirates. Hampton returns to action of Dec. 1 when the Pirates host the Apprentice School at the Convocation Center.
