Hampton Softball Defeats Grambling State 15-6 in Five Innings

COVINGTON, Ga. (Feb. 15, 2025) …. Hampton University softball started day two of the HBCU Collegiate Invitational with a win over Grambling State. The Pirates won the contest 15-6 in five innings. HU produced its first home run of the 2025 campaign. Hampton took advantage of Grambling State's eight errors. Game two against Claflin was canceled due to inclement weather. 

Coach Cat Tarvin's side got the bats going early in the top half of the first frame producing seven runs. Before the Tigers recorded an out, HU had baserunners on first and third. Kylie Hill continued her strong start to the season with a two-RBI double. Miyah Sutton recorded her first collegiate home run bringing in two more runs. Sutton is the Pirate this season to generate a homer. Hampton was able to bat through the lineup in the first inning. Carmynn Bonner made it 7-0 on a three RBI double to left field. 

Grambling would respond in the bottom half of the stanza. HU started out the inning with a strikeout but the Tigers loaded the bases with two walks and an infield single. A single to left field brought in two runs for GSU. One more run came across the plate for the Tigers before the Pirates got out of the frame. 

Hampton during the next inning jumped out to a commanding 11-3 lead. The Pirate's first run scored on a walk by Taylor Ivey. Bonner with her second hit of the day produced another RBI. Before the end of the frame, an error brought in two more runs. The Tigers made a pitching change and got out of the jam with a strikeout. 

Hampton's offense continued to produce. The Pirates generated two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth frame. An error by the Tigers allowed two runs to come across the plate in the fourth. Sutton began the fifth inning with a double to the outfield. With three errors by Grambling State, Hampton made it 15-6.

Bonner finished the game going 4-for-4 from the plate with four RBIs. Sutton and Hill were the other Pirates to finish the contest with multiple hits.
