Pirates Offense Surges In Game Two’s Doubleheader Against Mount St. Mary’s

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 24, 2025) … Hampton University softball hosted Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader this afternoon. The Mountaineers held onto an early lead in game one. Five more runs for Mount St. Mary's came across in the final frame to help secure the victory 7-1. Coach Cat Tarvin's side produced five runs in the first inning in game two of the doubleheader. With another five-run frame and an issuance run late propelled HU to an 11-7 win.

GAME ONE

The Mountaineers got on the board first in the top of the second inning. Before the Pirates could record two outs, Mount St. Mary's loaded up the bases. A passed ball scored the first run of the contest. With an infield single, the Mountaineers led the game 2-0. Hampton got out of the inning when Simone Singleton caught a baserunner stealing.

The Pirates had a chance to respond in the bottom half of the second inning. Aitirihna Aiken led off the frame with a single to center field. Singleton reached first base on a hit by pitch advancing Aiken. Mount St. Mary's got out of the jam recording three straight outs.

Throughout the next four frames, both teams held the opposing side scoreless. The Pirates were held to one hit by the Mountaineers pitcher Sophia Schmehl. HU's Jada Evans was also impressive during this stretch. While Mount St. Mary's had three hits in four frames, Evans and HU's defense kept the contest within striking distance.

The Mountaineer's bats got fire once again in the top of the seventh. Mount St. Mary's produced nearly half of their hits in the final frame. The Mountaineers also took advantage of three errors made by the Pirates. Hampton brought in a run in the bottom half of the stanza on Carmynn Bonner's triple. Mount St. Mary's stopped the damage on a fly-out to secure game one of the doubleheader. 

GAME TWO

Coach Cat Tarvin's squad took a commanding lead early on scoring in the first frame. Before the Mountaineers could record an out in the first inning, HU's Kylie Hill produced a run on a single to the outfield. A passed ball brought in Cassidy Lee. Megan Ramos tallied her first two RBIs of the season on a bases-clearing triple. One more run came across for the Pirates with Amani Johnson's single to the outfield. Johnson would be thrown out at second trying to extend the single to a double. 

While Mount St. Mary's responded in the second frame with two runs, Hampton's offense continued to fire on all cylinders. In the bottom half of the third, five more runs came across the plate for the Pirates. Johnson produced another run with a single up the middle. Bonner tallied two more RBIs on a triple to right center field. With two outs on the board, Hampton's Raven Jackson manufactured another run on an infield single making it 10-3.
Mount St. Mary's cut the Pirate's advantage in the top half of the fourth. A double to center field and a bases-clearing triple to make it 10-7. Hill gave Hampton an insurance run late in the contest. With Bonner's early walk in the bottom of the sixth, HU had a baserunner with only one out. Hill found a gap in the defense on a single down the right-field line bringing in Bonner. While the Mountaineers had baserunners on first and third in the final inning, HU got the final out securing the win. 

Bonner went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate while tallying two RBIs. Hill and Johnson both recorded three hits. 

UP NEXT

Hampton returns to action at the Pirate-Spartan Challenge on Friday, Feb. 28th. The Pirate's first game of the weekend is slated for noon against South Dakota.
