Hampton, Va. (Feb. 25, 2025) … Hampton (6-19, 2-12) played tough defense and refused to back down, but College of Charleston (19-6, 10-4) used its inside game to post a 70-58 victory over the Pirates at the Hampton Convocation Center.
"We played a competitive game against a really good team," Coach
Tamisha Augustin said. "Charleston's offensive rebounding and second-chance baskets were the difference today. After our slow start, we needed a change of pace and
Malaka Cobb does that for us. It led to some transition baskets and helped get us back in the game.
Jasha Clinton came up big in the second half."
Le'Asia Foreman had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards and Clinton tallied 17 points, including 15 in the second half, to keep the game close. Four Cougars scored double figures Taryn Barbot (18), Taylor Barbot (14), Sophia Tougas (13), and Lara Rohkuhl (12).
The first quarter was a defensive struggle. The two teams combined for nine steals, 14 turnovers with Hampton shooting 25 percent and Charleston clicking on just 16.7 percent of its shots from the field. The end result was a low-scoring contest with the first quarter ending in an 8-8 tie.
Charleston opened the second quarter with six straight points to go ahead 14-8 capped by two free throws by Taryn Barbot. The lead grew to 25-14 with 3:53 before halftime on a Barbot three-pointer.
But the Pirates reeled off 12 straight points to take the lead 26-25 in the closing minutes of the second quarter.
Casey Miller scored Hampton's final two field goals of the run on layups. Jazmyn Stone made a bucket for Charleston and Clinton converted a free throw in the final minute as Charleston led at halftime 29-28.
Hampton shot 39.2 percent from the field in the first two quarters while the Cougars shot 28.6 percent. Charleston made just 3-of-21 three-point attempts and Hampton was 8-of-9 from the free throw line. The big difference was a 27-17 rebounding edge by Charleston including 15 offensive boards for the Cougars. As a result, Charleston had 13 second-chance points. Hampton's Clinton and Charleston's Taryn Barbot each had nine points at intermission to lead all scorers.
A 9-0 run including back-to-back three-pointers early in the third quarter put the Cougars ahead 46-35 with 6:25 left. A trey by Clinton and a layup by
Le'Asia Foreman made it 46-40. With 1:25 on the clock, Amayah Reaves canned a three-pointer to close to 49-45.
While Charleston struggled on offense, the Cougars had 12 second-chance baskets following offensive rebounds to pull away. The Charleston lead grew to as many as 12 points on several occasions in the final quarter before closing out the game with a 70-58 win over the Pirates.
Hampton shot 39.6 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three-point range and made 84.6 percent of its free throws. Charleston shot just 33.8 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from beyond the arc
The game was originally scheduled for last Friday but was rescheduled following a snowstorm that blanketed Hampton Roads last week. The game with Charleston was the first game of a three-game homestand (Feb. 28 vs. Hofstra, March 2 vs. Northeastern) for the Pirates.
Hampton hosts Hofstra (10-15, 5-9) on Friday, Feb. 28 in a 7:00 p.m. contest at the Hampton University Convocation Center.
