Hampton Softball Split Day One of 901 Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 7, 2025) … Hampton University softball team began the 2025 campaign this afternoon at the 901 Classic. The Pirates won their season opener against Rust 8-0 in six innings. HU was able to record 11 hits and Jada Evans was dominant on the mound. In a close contest to Lindenwood Coach Cat Tarvin's side fell to the Lions 2-1. 

GAME ONE 

The Pirates got on the board in the first inning. After Aitirhna Aiken reached first on a walk, Carmynn Bonner produced Hampton's first hit of the 2025 season. Bonner stretched it out to a double but was thrown out at third. With runners on first and second, Rust got out of the frame with a strikeout. 

Hampton's offense continued to score runs in the second frame. Freshman Cassidy Lee started off the inning with a single to center field. While Lee advanced to second on a passed ball, the Fountain Inn, S.C. native, advanced again on a stolen base. An error made Rust with runners on first and third brought Lee home. Aiken stepped up to the plate and brought in HU's third run with a single to the outfield.  

Heading into the sixth inning, Hampton increased its lead to five. The Pirates bats continued to stay hot producing three hits and three runs. While Rust had gotten two quick outs an error kept the frame alive. With the Bearcats committing a throwing error, Kylie Hill Quinn advanced to third. Bonner with her second RBI of the game brought Quinn home putting the Pirates up 8-0. In the bottom half of the frame, Hampton produced three straight out to secure its first win of the 2025 season.

Jada Evans got the start on the mound for the Pirates. Evans pitched the complete game for Hampton and only gave up one hit. The Seaford, Del. native, recorded a career-high eight strikeouts while only walking one batter. 

GAME TWO

Hampton got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Aitirhna Aiken gave the Pirates an early base runner with the lead off single to center field. Kylie Hill with two outs came up clutch with a single up the middle to make it 1-0.

While Lindenwood gave up an early run Avery Wapp and Hampton's Angelina Branch were locked in a pitchers duel. Branch throughout the first four innings did not allow a single hit or a run. The Pirates had opportunities in the second and fourth frames to extend their early advantage. Kylee Quinn in the bottom of the second had a single with two outs to keep the inning alive. The Lions were able to limit the damage dealt and get out of the inning. While Lindenwood committed an error in the bottom half of the fourth frame, the Lions once again got out of the inning.

During the top of the fifth Lindenwood had an early baserunner with a single up the middle. The runner advanced to second during the next at-bat due to a stolen base. Before Hampton could record the second out of the inning, the Lions had runners and second and third. A flyout to centerfield tied it up 1-1. 

Lindenwood began the top of the sixth by reaching first on a throwing error by HU. With another error committed by Hampton later in the inning, the Lions took the lead 2-1. In the bottom half of the frame, the Pirates had an early baserunner. Lindenwood produced three straight outs to get out of the inning. With Hampton's bats going quiet in the final frame, the Pirates fell to the Lions 2-1.

UP NEXT 

Hampton resumes the 901 Classic tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. against Rust. The Pirates will end day two against the host school Memphis at 4:00 p.m.
