Bench Strength Lifts Women's Basketball Over Stony Brook In CAA Tournament Opener

Le'Asia Foreman's free throws with 1.3 seconds left iced Hampton's win

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Le'Asia Foreman recorded career-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds, with none bigger than her rebound and a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds left as 13th-seeded Hampton defeated 12th-seeded Stony Brook 76-75 in the Coastal Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament opener on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, Hampton (8-22) advances to face sixth-seeded Monmouth at 2:30 p.m. in the second round on Thursday at CareFirst Arena.

"Overall, I am proud of our effort. I thought we had several people made plays today. (Aisha) Dabo made really big shots, three-pointers when we needed it, and she had a loose ball and dove on the floor for a rebound that gave us the possession back. Le'Asia was monumental in her game-winning rebounding as well. Amyah Reaves brings a steadiness to us," said Hampton University Head Coach Tamisha Augustin.

"When we have three or four in double figures, that's huge for us. Tyra Kennedy had a hot hand at first, Diamond Wiggins came in and gave us a great defensive effort along with Le'Asia. With everyone making an equal contribution, we were able to come out on top," Augustin added.

After each team traded 1-for-2 appearances from the foul line, Dabo connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key to give Hampton a 72-66 lead with 2:57 on the clock. A pull-up jumper from Zaida Gonzalez pulled the Seawolves to 73-70 with 88 seconds left.

Reaves hit a free throw for a 74-70 Hampton lead with 50 seconds left, but Dallyssha Moreno's layup brought Stony Brook to a bucket down 74-72 with 41 seconds on the clock.

Following a pair of missed free throws, Foreman snuck in and grabbed her 14th rebound of the game and was fouled with 1.3 seconds left. She calmly hit a pair and a three-pointer from Gonzalez at the buzzer wasn't enough.

Stony Brook (12-18) came out and hit seven of its first eight shots en route to a 14-4 lead on a Shamarla King 3-ball with 6:32 left in the opening quarter. The Pirates went on an 8-2 run to trim the deficit to 16-12 after a pair of steals and layups by Wiggins with 3:46 left.

The lead grew back to nine points at 21-12 as Breauna Ware converted a three-point play at the 2:33 mark, but Hampton closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run capped by a Kennedy layup with 36 seconds left to tie the game at 21-all.

The Seawolves scored the first five points of the second quarter and held a 28-24 lead with 6:33 left on a jumper from Gonzalez. Hampton then ripped off a 15-2 run to take command of the contest. Reaves hit a jumper with 6:12 left to put the Pirates on top 29-28, and Jasha Clinton found Foreman for a driving layup with 2:16 remaining in the half as Hampton held a 39-30 lead.

In the third quarter, Hampton kept the Seawolves at bay and held a 57-49 lead on a pair of CeCe Thomas free throws with 29 seconds left.

Hampton used a 7-2 spurt early in the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the day at 68-58 on a pullup jumper by Aisha Dabo with 6:29 left, forcing Stony Brook to take a timeout. That timeout jumpstarted the Seawolves as they scored the next seven points to trim the deficit to 68-65 on a Moreno layup with 4:22 remaining.

Joining Foreman in double figures was Dabo as she matched her career high with 17 points, Wiggins with career-highs of 11 points and five steals, Kennedy had 10 points and three steals, and Reaves had nine points and five assists. Hampton only had seven turnovers on the day and forced Stony Brook into 18 miscues.

The Pirates bench provided 41 of the 76 points on Wednesday afternoon, which is the second most points by the bench in a game for Hampton this season. That 41 only trails the 42 points Hampton's bench scored in a 59-57 win at Stony Brook on February 14.
