Pirates Fall to Norfolk State 13-4 in Non-Conference Matchup

HAMPTON, Va. (March 18, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team fell to Norfolk State this afternoon 13-4 in four innings. Errors plague the Pirates with HU committing four. Sophomore Kylee Quinn had a superb day from the plate going 2-for-3 while producing her first triple of the season.

Norfolk State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The Spartans scored their first run with a stolen base. NSU loaded up the bases with two consecutive hit by pitches. Another walk brought in a run for the Spartans. While Norfolk State only had one hit in the frame the final two runs came across on an error and a wild pitch.

The Pirates threatened to cut into the NSU's lead. Kylee Quinn with one out, produced a triple to right center. Hampton loaded up the bases with a walk and a fielder's choice. The Spartans halted the Pirate's early momentum by recording a ground out to end the stanza.

While Norfolk State got on the board again in the second, Coach Cat Tarvin's side got the bats going. Freshman Miyah Sutton began the inning with a single down the left-field line. The Pirate's first run of the afternoon came on a fielder's choice. Hampton took advantage of two errors committed by Norfolk State to make it 5-3.

The Pirates got out of a jam in the top of the fourth, holding the Spartans scoreless. Quinn led off the bottom half of the frame with her second hit of the game. Kylie Hill followed up the early base knock with a single up the middle. HU made it a one-run contest, taking advantage of another error by NSU.

The Spartans offense got going once again in the final three innings. NSU produced at least one run in the final three frames. Norfolk State manufactured two runs in the fifth on a double to left field. During the top of the seventh, the Spartans tallied five more runs to make it 13-4.
