Hampton Softball Split Day Two of the Pirate-Spartan Challenge

HAMPTON, Va. (March 1, 2025) … Hampton University softball split day two of the Pirate-Spartan Challenge. Hampton took game one from UMass-Lowell 3-1. The Pirates third inning helped HU claim its seventh victory of the 2025 campaign. The River Hawks in game two held the Pirates to three hits. UMass-Lowell scored a run in the first two frames and held onto the 2-0 advantage securing the win

GAME ONE

After both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, Hampton got on the board in the bottom of the third. Carmynn Bonner began the frame with a single to center field. While the Pirates hit into a double play, Coach Cat Tarvin's side got the bats going. Santrea Atmstead reached second on an error and a run came across the plate. Back-to-back doubles by Miyah Sutton and Cassidy Lee made it 3-0.

Leah Maduro got the start for the Pirates. In her 3.1 innings of work, Maduro only gave up four hits. The River Hawks started to cut into Hampton's lead in the fourth frame. After Umass-Lowell scored a run an error by HU. Pitcher Jada Evans entered the contest for the Pirates and halted the River Hawks' comeback. 

While Evans only recorded two strikeouts in 3.2 innings, the line senior on the roster only gave one hit. Hampton had another chance to score in the sixth. Lee reached first base on a walk and later advanced third on an error by the River Hawks. UMass-Lowell got out of the stanza on fly out to left field. 

Hampton recorded three quick outs to end the contest securing the 3-1 win. Bonner, Sutton, and Lee all recorded hits for the Pirates. The freshman duo of Sutton and Lee produced all of Hampton's RBIs in game one.

GAME TWO

UMass-Lowell got off to a quick start on the offensive end. The River Hawks scored in the first two innings and produced four of their seven hits during this stretch. In the first frame, UMass-Lowell brought in a run on a double to the outfield. During the next stanza, a triple cleared the bases making it 2-0 in favor of the River Hawks.

Hampton began the bottom half of the frame with a single up the middle by Armstead. The Pirates could not take advantage of the leadoff base knock. The River Hawks recorded three straight outs to get out of the inning.

Hampton's Angelina Branch and UMass-Lowell's Giana Lacedra were looked into a pitchers' dual the nest five frames. Both starting pitchers recorded five strikeouts. While Branch gave up four early hits, the River Hawks bats were held quiet tallying three hits in the final five innings.

The Pirate's best chance to dig into the River Hawk's advantage. Sutton began the stanza with an infield single. While Sutton was out on a fielder's choice, Hampton still had a baserunner on second. Hill during the next at-bat advanced to third on a wild pitch. UMass-Lowell stopped the Pirate's momentum with back-to-back outs.
