HAMPTON, VA. (MARCH 2, 2025) … Trailing 66-63 with 1:03 left, Hampton (7-20, 3-13) stormed back to take the lead 67-66 lead on a putback with two seconds remaining by
Le'Asia Foreman and
Diamond Wiggins added a free throw in the final second as the Pirates posted a come-from-behind 68-66 victory over Northeastern (2-23, 1-15) on Senior Day at the Hampton Convocation Center.
Northeastern scored buzzer beaters in both the first and second quarters but in the final quarter, with the game on the line, it was Hampton that scored the deciding points.
"I'm really pleased with our effort down the stretch. We regained momentum and played 40 strong minutes," Coach
Tamisha Augustin said. "At the end, (Northeastern coach Priscilla) Coach Edwards-Lloyd switched went to a zone defense from man, but we were ready for that and were able to pull it out."
Hampton honored the team's four seniors, including
Amyah Reaves, Janae Dublin,
CeCe Thomas and, Arina Nikiskina, with their parents, relatives, and friends during pregame ceremonies. Hampton was without the services of leading scorer
Jasha Clinton, and Dublin who was injured. Northeastern was short-handed as well, playing only six players in the contest.
Hampton got off to a hot start with
Aisha Dabo's field goal to start the game. Following a Northeastern bucket, baskets by Hampton's Nikishina, Reaves, and another Dabo basket boosted the Pirates to an 8-2 advantage. The lead grew to 20-11 after a Thomas trey and a reverse layup by Foreman. The Pirates led 20-15 after the first quarter while shooting a torrid 64.3 percent from the field while holding Northeastern to 35.7 percent accuracy. Northeastern had just two players in the scoring column in the first quarter. Alyssa Staten (9) and Abigail Jegede (6).
The Huskies found their footing in the second period, and a 9-2 run tied the game 24-24 after two free throws by Yirsy Queliz. Hampton made just 2-14 shots to start the second period. But Coach Augustin's team rebounded by converting 5-of-7 of their shots to close out the quarter. The Pirates held a 36-32 lead at intermission after Queliz made a long three-pointer at the buzzer for the Huskies. The Pirates never trailed in the first half and there were two ties along the way.
Hampton outrebounded the Huskies 20-15 and grabbed 11 offensive boards giving the Pirates 14 second-chance points. The Pirates inside game kept the Huskies at bay with 24 first half points. Thomas had 10 points to lead the Pirates while Staten (11) and Jegede (10) paced the Huskies.
The Huskies stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Pirates 23-17 to take a 55-53 lead entering the fourth period. After a Huskies basket to start the third quarter,
Tyra Kennedy connected on a three-pointer making it 39-34. The teams traded three-pointers with
Malaka Cobb hitting from long range. A 7-2 Northeastern run put the Huskies ahead 49-42 with 3:46 left in the third quarter. The Pirates made just 2-of-7 shots to start the quarter but converted 4-of-5 in the final three minutes as the Huskies led 55-53 after three periods. The Huskies shot 64.3 percent from the field in the third period while converting a trio of threes. After a slow start, Hampton shot 50.0 percent with two three-pointers.
Northeastern led by as many as six points in the final period and still had a lead with :50 left on the clock before the Pirates scored the last five points for the victory. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and marked the 600th home game for the Pirates including games at Holland Hall before the opening of the Hampton Convocation Center.
Thomas paced Hampton with 14 points, while Dabo added 12, Reaves and Foreman had 10 each. Foreman and
Diamond Wiggins shared game-high rebounding honors with eight each as Hampton outrebounded Northeastern 39-29. Jegede was the leading scorer for Northeastern with a game-high 20 points.
The contest with Northeastern marked the final home game for the Pirates. Hampton concludes the 2024-25 regular season with games at UNCW (March 6) and at Charleston (March 8). The 2025 Credit Union 1 CAA Women's Basketball Championship is scheduled from March 12-16 at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C
