Pirates Close Out Drexel Series With a 6-5 Win in Extra Innings

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March 23, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team defeated the Drexel Dragons 6-5 in extra innings. Coach Cat Tarvin's side's victory marks the first Coastal Athletic Association series the Pirates have won this season. HU had jumped out to an early advantage in the third. The Pirates offense provided some clutch hitting down the stretch to improve to 4-0 in extra frames.

Leah Maduro got the start on the mound for the Pirates this afternoon. The Sophomore held the Dragons scoreless through five innings while recording five strikeouts. While Drexel was held scoreless through this stretch, the Pirate's offense built a three-run advantage.

Hampton began the top of the third frame with a double to the outfield by Kylie Hill. Maduro was able to score the first run of the contest with a base knock. After another wild pitch by the Dragons, the Pirates once again had a baserunner in scoring position. Before the end of the stanza Megan Ramos and Simone Singleton drove in runs to make it  3-0.

Drexel got the bats going in the bottom of the sixth. After a walk with one out, the Dragons scored their first run of the contest on a double to center field. Two errors plagued the Pirates in the sixth frame. A throwing error by Hampton allowed another run to come across the plate. Drexel's three-run blast gave them the advantage 5-3 heading into the final stanza.

Kylee Quinn began the top of the seventh with her second hit of the day. With two outs on the board, Cassidy Lee cleared the bases on a two-run home run. The freshman becomes the first Pirates this season to record a home run in consecutive games.

During the top of the ninth Hampton's offense had success again. Quinn with only one out on the bard produced a triple to left field. Hill followed up Quinn's triple with a base knock making it 6-5. Drexel got out of the inning on a double play. The Pirates in the bottom half of the ninth held Drexel's bats quiet.
