Hampton Softball Opens Delaware Series With a Pair of Losses

HAMPTON, Va. (April 18, 2025) …  The Hampton University softball team began its three-game series against the Delaware Blue Hens this afternoon. Delaware took both games from the Pirates. The Blue Hens' offense was firing on all cylinders in both contests. One nation's top bullpens held Hampton to only three runs.

GAME ONE

Delaware jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. The Blue Hens had a runner in scoring position after a one-out single and a stolen base. With two outs on the board, a base knock to the outfield scored Delaware's first run of the contest. While consecutive stolen bases advanced the runner to third, Hampton got out of the inning on a groundout to the third baseman, Kylie Hill

Throughout the first game, Hampton's bats were held quiet by UD's pitcher Bille Kerwood. In her five-inning outing, Kerwood recorded eight strikeouts. The Pirates had their baserunner of the afternoon on a dropped third strike in the bottom of the third. Kylee Quinn was left stranded on the bases with the Blue Hens getting the third out of the frame.

Delaware took control of game one in the top of the second. The Blue Hens were able to produce six runs on five hits. Delaware's first run of the stanza came on a single through the left side. While Hampton recorded the second out of the frame, a groundout made it 3-0. Four more runs came across the plate while the Pirates had two out. A two-RBI double and a two-run home run gave the Blue Hens a seven-run advantage.

Before the end of the contest, Delaware scored two more runs. The Blue Hens produced a run in the top of the third and fourth innings. Down to their last three outs, the Pirates trailed UD 9-0. With the side retiring in order, Delaware secured game one.

GAME TWO

The Blue Hens got on the board first in the top of the first. Delaware began the second half of the doubleheader with a triple. Hampton recorded an out, but UD brought in the runner from the leadoff triple. After the initial run, the Pirates got out of the frame with consecutive outs. While Hampton only gave up two hits through the first two innings, Delaware jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the second on a two-run homer.

The Pirates' bats were producing throughout the contest. Early on in the contest, Hampton's hits were produced with two outs on the board, making it difficult for a rally to begin. While the Blue Hens scored in the top of the third, the Pirates started to chip into UD's lead. With two outs, Carmynn Bonner had a base knock up the middle. Kylie Hill produced her second hit of the game with a double to left field scoring Bonner.

Delaware's offense continued to produce in the top of the fifth, scoring two more runs. While Hampton's bats were held quiet in the fifth and sixth innings, HU got the offense going in the seventh. Freshman Amani Johnson began the stanza with a double. Quinn brought in Johnson on a triple to right field. Aitirhna Aiken with her second hit of the contest made it 7-3. The Blue Hens halted the Pirates' momentum ending the game.
