Hampton Softball Splits Doubleheader With Maryland Eastern Shore

HAMPTON, Va. (April 22, 2025) … Hampton University softball team split its doubleheader against the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks. The Pirates won the first contest 8-4 while recording 18 hits. During game two, the Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. While Hampton scored late, HU fell to Maryland Eastern Shore 3-1.

GAME ONE

Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings. Freshman Ava Lester got the start for the Pirates. The Richmond, Va. native, finished the contest with a career-high eight strikeouts. 

Hampton got on the board first in the top of the third frame. Kylie Hill began the stanza with a single in the infield. Carmynn Bonner followed up the leadoff single with a two-run homer. Bonner is now one of two Pirates to record a home run in back-to-back games. While Santrea Armstead and Megan Ramos recorded hits in the third inning, the Hawks held the Pirates to two runs. 

Maryland Eastern Shore quickly responded, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the third. The Hawks had baserunners on second and third. A wild pitch brought in two runs, tying up the contest 2-2. While UMES had another baserunner in scoring position, Hampton got out of the frame.

The Pirates regain the lead at the top of the fifth. Cassidy Lee began the stanza with a single to right field. While Hampton produced three consecutive hits, Lee was thrown out advancing to third. Freshman Ahmani Johnson scored the go-ahead run on a base knock to right field. 

In the final two innings, Hampton manufactured five runs to jump out to an 8-2 lead. The Hawks in the bottom of the seventh got on the board once again. Maryland Eastern Shore first run of the seventh scored on a wild pitch. While a double brought in another run, the Pirates got out of the stanza 

GAME TWO

Maryland Eastern Shore got on the board first in the bottom of the third. The first run of the contest came on a double steal attempt. After the double steal, a base hit to center field made it 2-0. The Hawks threaten to score once again in the fourth inning. With two outs on the board, a base knock to left field made it 3-0. Hampton was able to throw out a runner advancing to home from centerfield.

Heading into the final frame, the Pirates had only recorded four hits. In the top of the fourth, Hampton had base runners on first and third. With two outs on the board, HU was not able to dig into the Hawks' advantage.

The Pirates started to dig into Maryland Eastern Shore's lead in the top of the seventh. Coach Cat Tarvin's side began the stanza with Lee reaching second on an error. While Meagan Ramos flied out, she advanced Lee to third. Miyah Sutton grounded out to the pitcher but scored a run. With two outs already on the board, Maryland Eastern Shore held onto its two-run advantage.
