Softball Splits Saturday Twinbill At Towson

TOWSON, Md. (April 5, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team split a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) doubleheader on Saturday at Towson winning the opener 12-7 and falling 6-4 in the nightcap at Tiger Stadium.

GAME ONE

In the top of the second Hampton loaded up the bases after a pair of base knocks and a walk. Aitirhna Aiken drove in the Pirate's first run on a single to the outfield. Kylee Quinn followed up the base hit with a single to make it 2-0. Towson got out of the frame by recording back-to-back outs.

While the Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the second, the bats continued to produce for Coach Cat Tarvin's side in the top of the third. Leah Maduro began the frame with a single to right field. Maduro advanced to second on the next at-bat with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs on the board, Santrea Armstead kept the inning alive on a single through the left side. Amani Johnson and Quinn recorded their second hits of the game increasing HU's advantage to 5-1. Before the end of the stanza, the Pirates drove in four more runs to make it 9-1.

Towson throughout the next two innings started to claw into Hampton's lead. The Tigers produced an early triple in the third before the Pirates could record an out. While the next batter grounded out another run came across to cut HU's advantage down to six. Towson tallied four hits at the bottom of the fourth, which led to four runs coming across the plate.

Hampton responded back to the Tiger's comeback with the offense continuing to produce. Carmynn Bonner produced a double to right centerfield with only one out. Kylie Hill scored Bonner with her third hit of the game. Maduro would clear the bases with a two-run blast putting Hampton back in front by five 12-7.

In the final two frames, the Pirate's defense stood strong to secure the victory. Towson was only able to record one hit in the final two innings.

Quinn and Hill each went 3-for-5 in game one as Quinn drove in three runs and Hill drove in two. Five other Pirates had a pair of hits in the contest as Hampton amassed 18 hits which is the second most in a game this season. Only the 23 hits against Drexel was higher than the game one outburst.

Jada Evans went the distance to earn her fourth win of the season as she struck out five in the decision.

GAME TWO

Towson jumped out to an early advantage in the second game of the afternoon. In the bottom of the first, the Tigers hit a three-run homer. During the next inning, two more runs came across the plate for Towson. The Tigers were able to drive in runs on a double to left center and base hit up the middle.

The Pirates started to shrink Towson's early 5-0 advantage in the top of the third. Aiken began the frame with a walk. Bonner's double to left center field drove in the leadoff runner. During the next at-bat, Hill advanced Bonner closer to home plate on a single up the middle. With two outs on the board, Ramos produced a base knock RBI to make 5-2.

While Hampton had only one hit in the fourth inning, the Pirates took advantage of two walks issued by the Tigers. Bonner with an infield single shrunk Towson's advantage down to two.

Towson pushed the lead back to three with a double in the bottom of the fifth, but Hampton had one last shot after each team went scoreless in the sixth.

Bonner started the top of the seventh with a blast to left field for a 6-4 Hampton deficit. The Tigers recorded the next three outs to stop a potential Hampton comeback.

Hampton (12-22, 4-11) had six hits in the contest and Bonner accounted for three of them with a single, double and home run. She took the loss throwing the first 1.2 innings and allowed five runs.

Towson (18-19, 7-8) had a 2-for-4 performance from Cara Bohner to pace their eight hit attack in game two.
