Pirates Fall In Extra Innings to UNCW in Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. (May 1, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team began its three-game series against the UNCW Seahawks this afternoon. HU got on the board in early and held onto a one-run lead. The Seahawks tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. UNCW on a sacrifice fly secured the 2-1 victory in the tenth frame. The Pirates would out-hit the Seahawks 7-6.

Coach Cat Tarvin's side was able to strike first in the opening stanza. Kylee Quinn's hit by pitch gave HU an early baserunner. With two outs on the board, Kylie Hill drove in Quinn on a base knock up the middle. Leah Maduro kept the inning alive with a double. After giving up the double, UNCW ended the frame with Makayla Huddleston earning her first strikeout of the day.

Maduro got the start on the mound for the Pirates this evening. The Miami, Fla. native, held UNCW's offense to only three hits. Maduro was locked in a pitcher's duel with the Seahawks' Huddleston. Huddleston finished the contest with six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the fifth, UNCW tied up the contest. The Seahawks began the frame with consecutive base hits. Angelina Branch came in to relieve Maduro after the first two batters. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. While Hampton got the second out of the stanza, the sacrifice fly brought in the tying run.

With both sides being held scoreless during the next two frames, the contest headed into extra innings. Hampton had a strong opportunity to score in the top of the ninth.  In the ninth, Maduro led off the inning single to the outfield. Jasmine Venson would be called upon to pinch run. While on the bases, Venson advanced to third. Freshman Cassidy Lee kept the frame alive with a hit by pitch. Once again, UNCW was able to escape unharmed.

UNCW began the inning by drawing a walk. A bunt that turned into a single advanced the baserunner to third base. With the base runner 60ft closer to home, a sacrifice fly scored the winning run.
