Women's Soccer Faces Howard In Inaugural HBCU Invitational Sunday

HAMPTON, Va. (August 13, 2025) … The 2025 Hampton University women's soccer season will again attempt to begin its 10th season of action on Sunday afternoon as the Pirates tangle with Howard for a 3 p.m. kick in the inaugural HBCU Women's Soccer Invitational at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. The game will have live stats with the link to it above.

Hampton's match with Delaware State on Thursday was postponed after two hours of delays from storms that rolled through the Hampton Roads region.

LAST YEAR VS. HOWARD
The Lady Pirates secured a tie 0-0 in the home opener against Howard. Entering today's match, Hampton had never produced a tie against the Bison in the program's history. While HU was out-shot 14-3, freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Howell produced seven saves to keep the clean sheet.  Howard leads the all-time series 3-0-1.

ABOUT HAMPTON
  • Second-year head coach Scot Vorwold brought in a 14-member recruiting class coming from five continents, seven countries and six states.
  • Keri Geter was named to the preseason All-CAA honorable mention squad marking the first Pirate in program history to be recognized on a preseason team.
  • The Pirates return three of their top four scorers in Van Caenegem (3g, 1a, 7pts) and Nylah Jennings (2g, 2a, 6pts), Mattie Edozie (2g, 4pts).

ABOUT HOWARD
  • The Bison avoided the rainy Mid-Atlantic weather and dropped a 2-0 decision at home against North Florida on Thursday night. North Florida outshot the hosts 16-8 as Trinity Knox made seven saves for Howard.
  • Howard returns three Northeast Conference award winners from 2024 when they captured the league title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Samantha James (Midfielder of the Year), Gabriella Garcia-Terrell (Rookie of the Year.) and Knox (Goalkeeper of the Year) return to lead the Bison. James led the team in scoring with 15 points. Garcia-Terrell totaled 13 points, leading the team with 30 shots on goal, including three-game winners.

HAMPTON-HOWARD EQUALS RECORD CROWD
When Hampton visited Howard to start the 2021 season, the game was played in front of the largest crowd to watch a Hampton women's soccer match as 3,254 people visited Greene Stadium for a 3-1 Howard victory.

UP NEXT
Hampton heads to Grambling, Louisiana for a pair of matches against Southwest Athletic Conference foes. They'll start against the host Grambling State Tigers on August 24 at 6:30 p.m. ET, and then face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on August 26 at noon ET.
