Nylah Jennings goal off a feed from
Jayda Sutton in the 83
rd minute provided the lone tally for Hampton on Sunday afternoon as they dropped a 4-1 decision to Howard in the inaugural HBCU Women's Soccer Invitational at Audi Field.
The teams played tight-knit soccer through most of the first half as Howard (1-1) got the first goal of the match with 76 seconds left as Sinclaire Green found the lower right corner of the net to put the Bison up 1-0.
Gabrielle Terrell-Garcia scored the first of her two second half goals in the 49
th minute with a shot into the lower right corner. Rachel Suttle made the margin 3-0 in the 55
th minute and Terrell-Garcia converted a penalty kick for a 4-0 Howard lead in the 65
th minute.
Hampton (0-1) found some momentum as Sutton connected with Jennings on a beautiful feed and the sophomore from nearby Bowie, Maryland ripped one into the back of the net for the Pirates goal at 82:36.
On the match, Howard outshot Hampton 18-12 as
Avery John made eight saves for the Pirates.
Hampton now goes south to Louisiana for a pair of first-time matches against Southwestern Athletic Conference starting August 24 when they face Grambling State at 6:30 p.m. ET. They'll then face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on August 26 at Grambling State at noon ET.
The Pirates will be home on August 30 for a 6 p.m. start against Bluefield State.
