Jaya Rimm recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs to lead three in double figures in kills for the Hampton University volleyball team on Saturday as they lost their final match of the Hampton Tournament to UMES 25-22, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17.
Earlier in the day, Hampton dropped a three-set affair to East Carolina 25-19, 25-12, 25-8.
In the nightcap, a nip-and-tuck first set that saw five ties and three lead changes in which the Hawks used kills from Anjola Omolewa and Rayah Howell to take 25-22. The second set was another wild affair.
UMES came out strong racing to an 8-3 lead after a Hampton attack error. The Pirates methodically clawed back into the contest and tied it for the first time since 1-1 on an attack error from UMES to even the score at 19. The teams traded through a 24-all tie after an Omolewa kill. Hampton took the set as Katerini Pappa recorded a kill for 25-24 and then served an ace to win 26-24.
A
Racquel Frazier kill in the third set pulled Hampton even at 12-all, but UMES scored nine of the next 10 points en route to a 25-16 set win and kept Hampton at bay in the final set.
Joining Rimm with double figure kills against UMES were Pappa (12) and Frazier (11).
Morgan Warren recorded 35 assists and 14 digs for a double-double as well.
Match 1 – ECU 3, Hampton 0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-8)
In the opening match on Saturday, Hampton dropped a three-set contest to East Carolina in the Battle of Pirates 25-19, 25-12, 25-8.
Hampton jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage in set one after an ECU attack error. The Pirates from Carolina scored six of the next eight points to lead 8-5 following a pair of kills by Kai Bailey.
The homestanding Pirates trimmed the deficit to 8-7 following a kill from
Lillian Campbell and an ECU attack error. Hampton cut the ECU lead to one again at 12-11 following a
Kylah McNeal kill and an attack error by ECU but that was as close as the opening set got.
Set two saw four ties and three lead changes early as Hampton last tied it at 5-5. ECU scored 10 of the next 11 points to take the second set and continued that momentum in set three.
McNeal had seven kills to lead Hampton, while
Jaya Rimm and
Racquel Frazier had four apiece.
Morgan Warren had 14 assists, while Frazier was tops in digs with five.
Hampton is back in action next weekend as they travel to Newark, Del. for the Delaware Invitational facing Va. Tech, LeMoyne and Delaware.
