Hampton Opens CAA Play with 63-54 Win Over Stony Brook

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 2, 2026) … Hampton (7-6, 1-0) opened the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) portion of the schedule with a 63-54 victory over Stony Brook (5-9, 0-1). It marked Hampton's third straight win over the Seawolves. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Pirates and ends a two-game winning streak for the Seawolves.

Hampton's Aaryn Battle tallied a career-high 23 points with seven boards and teammate Kayla Lezama added 18 points including seven consecutive points for the Pirates at a critical juncture at the start of the second half.

Stony Brook scored the first basket of the game before Hampton reeled off 11 consecutive points before the Seawolves called a timeout with 6:37 left in the opening quarter. Hampton had trouble finding the basket in the final five minutes of the first quarter, making just 1-of-11 shots from the field. Stony Brook took advantage of Hampton's misfires and outscored the Pirates 14-4 the rest of the quarter to take a one-point, 16-15, lead.

The Pirates turned up the defensive heat in the second period, holding the Seawolves to 22.2 percent shooting. After converting 7-of-7 free throws in the first quarter, Stony Brook continued to gain ground from the line. In the second quarter, the Seawolves made 5-of-6 free throws.

By halftime, Stony Brook had made 12-of-13 free throws while Hampton was 1-of-1 from the line. For the game, Stony Book converted 15-of-18 free throws while the Pirates went to the line seven times, making four.

Behind Battle's 10 points and Lezama's eight points, Hampton held a 32-30 lead at intermission. Johanna Potter led the Seawolves with eight points. Stony Brook outrebounded the Pirates in the first half 25-21 with 11 offensive boards.

The red-hot Lezama started the third quarter with a three, a bucket and another basket from deep in the corner to boost the Pirates lead. Battle's two buckets increased the Pirate lead to 45-36 at the 2:51 mark. The Pirates held a 50-42 advantage after three periods.

Stony Brook scored the first four points of the final quarter to close to within four but Battle's lay-up with 7:39 to go boosted the Pirate lead to 52-46. The Hampton lead again shrunk to four following a Potter basket with 7:12 left. But a lay-up by Battle and a three-pointer by Kiki McElrath increased the lead to nine with 5:17 left. Stony Brook was unable to make a late run and missed their final five shots from the field boosting the Pirates to the win in the conference opener.

The win gave Hampton its first 1-0 start in league play since the 2022-23 season.

Hampton returns to action on Sunday at Elon for a 1 p.m. tip before hosting Charleston on January 11 at 2 p.m.
