Softball Falls Twice In Longwood Tournament Day Two

FARMVILLE, Va. (Feb. 28, 2026) … Day two at the Bank of the James Invitational Softball Tournament was a tough one for the Hampton University softball team as they fell 9-1 to Youngstown State in six innings and 5-4 to host Longwood in eight innings.

Against the Penguins, Hampton scored a run in the second inning as Carmynn Bonner reached on a single to start the inning. After a strikeout, Karmyn Brown reached on a throwing error and advanced to second which allowed Bonner to score cutting an early deficit to 2-1.

Youngstown State scored in every inning and was paced by Emma Gilkerson with a 4-for-4 performance, while Tai Turner and Kennedy Dean drove in a pair of runs each.

In Hampton's contest with Longwood, the Pirates got on the board in the first as Jayleen Reeves singled and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt. She scored as Sydney Evans tripled to right field.

Hampton put up two runs in the second as Brown singled and went to third on a double by Violet Salazar. Raven Jackson's groundout advanced both scoring Brown. Aitrinha Aiken reached on a throwing error which played Salazar to put Hampton up 3-1.

Longwood got a run in the third and in the seventh to tie the game at three. The Pirates got one in the top of the eighth on a Salazar single to score Brown.

Reeves and Salazar were 2-for-4 each to lead Hampton in game two.

The Pirates will take on Mt. St. Mary's and Longwood again on Sunday.
