BOSTON, Mass. (Mar. 1, 2026) … Behind a wild fourth quarter charge and a season-best five in double figures, the Hampton Pirates (10-18, 4-12) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 77-71 win over Northeastern in CAA Women's Basketball action at Cabot Center on a snowy Sunday afternoon.
Olivia Smith opened the final quarter with a layup to tie game for first time at 56-all. Following four free throws from the Huskies, a
Kiki McElrath triple and a
Taylor Gibson layup gave the Pirates their first lead at 61-60.
Aaryn Battle dropped a floating jumper which gave Hampton a 63-60 lead with 6:45 left.
Northeastern responded with six straight points as a pair of Morgan Matthews' layups put the hosts up 66-63 with 4:44 remaining.
McElrath had a driving layup and then Smith played her own game of beat the clock with a floater beating the shot clock horn for a 67-66 lead with 2:59 on the clock. That provided the Pirates a lead they never relinquished.
Gibson pushed the lead to 69-66 with a nifty turn-around layup with 2:28 left. A pair of free throws from the hosts trimmed the margin to 69-68, but a three-point play from Smith on a driving layup pushed Hampton's margin back to 72-68 with 74 seconds left.
Dabo hit a layup, Battle had two free throws and
Kayla Lezama with one have the Pirates their final points.
To start the game Northeastern jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but Hampton got to 12-9 after a Gibson layup.
The Huskies put up a pair of layups from Taylor Holohan and Alyssa Staten forcing a Hampton timeout down 16-9 with 3:05 left in first.
Playing in her hometown, Lezama scored four straight points with a bucket and a pair of free throws to help pul Hampton down 16-14. A late bucket for the hosts gave them an 18-14 lead after one.
Northeastern held the lead throughout the opening half. Hampton did pull to 28-26 after a three-ball from
Aisha Dabo with 2:32 left in the half. Her second triple of the quarter brought the Pirates to down 34-31, but Yirsy Queliz beat the halftime horn with a triple to give the hosts a 37-31 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the lead grewr to eight points on a couple of occasions and each time Hampton pulled to within one possession. A Gibson layup with 40 seconds left made the margin 56-54 through three quarters.
McElrath scored a game-high 20 points for the Pirates to lead five in double figures. Gibson matched her season best with 14 points, while Dabo had 13 and three blocked shots. Smith added 12 points, while Battle had 10 points, four assists and three steals.
The Pirates hit 29-of-59 from the field (.492) and 7-of-18 from 3-point range (38.9%) while going 12-of-13 from the line (92.3%).
Hampton visits Campbell Thursday night at 7 p.m. before hosting William & Mary on Senior Day at 2 p.m. on March 7.
