Jason Mai

Jason Mai joins the Hampton staff this year after serving as the Offensive Coordinator at St. Augustine’s University.

His offense at Saint Augustine’s went from 12th to sixth in the CIAA without a full recruiting class last season.  They doubled their scoring average, increased total offense by 1,500 yards, threw ten more touchdown passes and five less interceptions.

Prior to Saint Augustine’s, Mai coached at Winston-Salem State from 2011-2015 highlighted by a 2012 NCAA Division II National Runner up finish.  His teams won three CIAA championships, three consecutive HBCU National Championships. 

At Winston-Salem State, he coached under current Hampton Head Coach Connell Maynor.  The Rams were 51-11 in five years and for four straight years was tops in the CIAA in total offense and scoring offense.  Three of those years they were top 10-ranked in NCAA Division II.  While with the Rams, he coached 18 All-CIAA players and three CIAA Players of the Year.

For the 2008-11 seasons, Mai coached at Virginia Union where the offense was ranked among the CIAA leaders in his time.  The Panthers averaged 24.6 points, 312.2 yards and 159.3 rushing yards per game. 

His first coaching stop in the CIAA was at Johnson C. Smith where he coached from 2006-08.  The Golden Bulls earned their first Pioneer Bowl bid and enjoyed the best start in school history going 5-1 in 2006.  J.C. Smith won its first home game since 2003 after starting 0-13 at home.

Mai started coaching at his alma mater Southwest Minnesota State from 2004-06 working with the wide receivers in an offense that averaged 21.1 points and 301.2 yards per game. 

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Sociology degree from Southwest Minnesota State University in 2005 and a Master’s in Sports Management from North Central University in 2015.
