Keith Coutreyer

A long-time Mid-Atlantic region coach and former Hampton men’s basketball assistant, Keith Coutreyer starts his second season on the Pirates sidelines this season.  He rejoins the Pirates after serving on the staff at Howard University for the last 10 years.

Coutreyer was an assistant in 2008-09 along with then assistant coach Edward “Buck” Joyner.  When Joyner took over in 2009-10, Coutreyer served as an assistant on his first staff.

Prior to Hampton he was the head coach at Laurel High School in Prince Georges County, Md. for eight years.  In his last three years at Laurel, the team posted a 52-20 record, going a school-record 22-3 overall and 17-1 in league play.  His final team won a school record 22 games winning the regular-season league title, capturing the county championship and taking the school’s first regional title since 1980.

“I am looking forward to returning to Hampton under the direction of President Dr. William R. Harvey, who orchestrated the Pirates move to the Big South Conference,” said Coutreyer. “I am grateful for the chance to once again be a part of the Pirates program.”

Coutreyer also has held special education teacher certification, which he earned at Trinity College in Washington, D.C. For 14 years, Coutreyer has patrolled the sidelines and the classroom, shaping youth for the future. In his tenure as a coach, Coutreyer has sent over 25 players to play at the NCAA level, be it Division I, II or III. “Wins will be celebrated and then forgotten,” Coutreyer said, “but the lives that you touch will last a lifetime.”

He graduated from Columbia Union College in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. At Columbia Union, now known as Washington Adventist University, Coutreyer played on the basketball team at the NCAA Division II level.  He earned his Master’s in Education Leadership at Howard in May 2018.
