Rodger Colbert, a former professional lacrosse player and collegiate Al-American defenseman, is the newest assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Hampton. Before joining Hampton, he served as the head men’s coach at the District of Columbia; a start-up HBCU Division II program. Throughout his 23-year career, Colbert has coached lacrosse at various levels. He was a volunteer coach with the Boston Cannons, after retiring from Major League Lacrosse. In the Spring of 2023,, he served as an adviser to one of the top high school teams in the country, Georgetown Preparatory School.

Colbert gained his education in both Boston and Washington D.C. Colbert completed his undergraduate studies at Georgetown where he was team captain in 2001. After being drafted 12th overall to the Bridgeport Barrage, Colbert’s professional career included stints with the New Jersey Pride as well as the Boston Cannons. It is during his time in Boston that he completed his Masters’ in Education at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

Whether private or public school educational systems, Colbert has experience. In June 2022, at his 25th High School reunion, he was inducted into The Peddie School’s Sports Hall of Fame in three different sports. It is his experience, at Peddie (both as a student and as a former coach), along with coaching Ridgewood High School (N.J.) that stand out as the most impactful experiences in his coaching career. These two places and the student-athletes successes garnered at these private and public institutions are the reasons Colbert works to mold student-athletes.

At Hampton, Colbert continues to cultivate young men into successful contributors of society as well as successful men on the lacrosse field. Coaching at the Division I-level has always been a dream. Now that dream is realized.
