PIRATES DROP TOUGH 46-6 DECISION TO NORFOLK STATE IN THE STATE FARM BATTLE OF THE BAY

Sanchez was named the State Farm Battle of Bay Most Outstanding Player as he finished the game with 12 tackles.
Final Stats

Norfolk, Va.
– The Pirates of Hampton University drop to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in MEAC play while the Spartans of Norfolk State improve to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in MEAC play on the season after the 44-6 victory.

Norfolk State finished the game with 443 yards of total offense including 229 yards passing by Dennis Brown and 214 yards on the ground rushing. Hampton was only able to get 203 yards of total offense and just 88 yards rushing, which is a season low for the Pirates.

“I am shocked,” said Pirates head coach Donovan Rose referring to the final score. “I have been low but never this low and we have a lot of things that we need to work on because this feels like the first game of the season all over again.”

The Pirates could not get things moving to start the game as they punted on their first three possessions of the game, while the Spartans scored a touchdown on their first three possessions of the game.

NSU scored 21 points in the first quarter alone. The first score was a 20 yard touchdown run by Brown and that was followed up by a 71 yard touchdown pass from Brown to Chris Bell. Brown would rush for 16 yards for another touchdown to end the quarter for the Spartans.

The second quarter started in the same fashion for the Pirates as there was not defensive presence in the game. The Spartans would turn a Hampton turnover into another seven points as Brown connected with Bell for his second passing touchdown of the game.

Norfolk State scored at will throughout the first half as they finished the half with 35 points while scoring six touchdowns and recorded 316 yards of total offense. Hampton would get on the board late in the second quarter when Herbert Bynes connected with PJ Hicks for an 11 yard touchdown to head into the half with a 35-6 score in favor of the Spartans.

Hampton came into the second half with a different game plan while the Spartans wanted to keep thing going in the same direction. The Spartans scored nine points in the third quarter with a 33 yard field goal by Justin Castellat and then a five yard touchdown run by Brown to make the score 44-6 headed into the fourth quarter.

Hampton was led by Julio Sanchez who finished the game with 12 total tackles and his was the State Farm Battle of the Bay Most Outstanding Player for the Pirates.

On a positive note for the Pirates, they were able to cut down on the penalties tallying only 11 miscues for 90 yards.

The Pirates will head home as the host the Bulldogs of South Carolina State for Homecoming 2009 on Saturday, October 24. Kick-off is at 2:00 p.m.
