NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Hampton University junior
Racquel Vassell had a hand in winning a pair of event titles on Saturday at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open to begin the 2009-10 indoor season, held at the Freeman Center.
Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.90, before helping the 4x400-meter relay team – that also featured
Rachel Burrell (Hampton, Va.),
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) and
Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) – win the gold with a combined time of 3:51.26.
Hampton's B relay team –
Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.),
Kayla Lee,
Kamilah Browne and
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) – finished fifth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:05.83.
The Lady Pirates also won the distance medley relay, when
Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.),
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica),
Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Jahlisa Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 12:22.12.
Freshman
Tyreka Arrington (Lanham, Md.) ran an 11:36.21 in the 3,000-meter run to finish fourth.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. for the Maryland-Eastern Shore Lid-Lifter Invite.
