ATLANTA, Ga. – Hampton University senior
Na-Hyun Baek won a singles title and helped take home a doubles title over the weekend at the ninth annual HBCU National Tennis Championships at the Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Center.
Baek (Seoul, Korea) was the top seed in the A singles bracket, earning a first-round bye before beating Winston-Salem State's Johanna Nunez 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16. She then beat Southern's Megan Wiltz 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before dispatching of Xavier's Anastesia Opata 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals. Baek then beat Rachel Pye of Florida A&M 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the final on Friday to win the bracket.
Baek also teamed up with
Jovanna Sangria (Long Beach, Calif.) to take the doubled title in the A bracket. The duo, seeded seventh, defeated Southern's Wiltz and Kathryn Curtis 9-8 in the final to win the title.
Livia Branco (Valinhos, Brazil) and
Maria Ycaza (Guayaquil, Ecuador), the top seed in the A doubles bracket, fell in the quarterfinal round to Eva Hankova and Katrina Szaboova of Bethune-Cookman 8-3. The duo of
Barenese Myers (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and newcomer Tabitha Daolio won the doubles title in the B bracket, having no opponent in the title match after defeating Southern's Jo'Vanna Gaines and Carlista Mahommed in the semifinals by default.
Daolio also took the individual title in the women's C singles bracket, beating Alcorn State's Arielle Buchman 7-6, 6-3 in the final.
Janelle Small advanced to the quarterfinal round in that bracket before falling to Buchman 6-4, 6-4.
Ycaza and Myers both wound up in the consolation bracket in the women's B singles division, each falling in the round of 16. Ycaza fell to Bethune-Cookman's Brittany Davis 6-0, 6-3, while Myers lost to Cayla Cross of North Carolina A&T 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Edson Alves turned in the best performance of the weekend for the Pirates, advancing all the way to the title match in the men's C singles bracket. After having a first-round bye, Alves defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Jorge Villacis 6-3, 6-4, before beating Kristopher Martin of Bethune-Cookman 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Alves then beat Florida A&M's Forrest Jenkins on an injury retirement in the semifinals before falling 7-5, 6-3 to FAMU's Takura Happy in the championship match.
Sung-Kwon Baek (Pusan, Korea) advanced to the semifinals of the men's A singles bracket, falling to Florida A&M's David Jackson 6-1, 6-4.
Nelio Mattos (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) lost his first-round match to Alcorn State's Winfried Weinbeer 2-6, 6-4, 10-5, falling to the consolation bracket.
Jungho Oh advanced to the semifinals of the men's B singles bracket for the Pirates, losing by retirement to Eduardo Legue of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Gellert Varga (Becej, Serbia), who was the top seed of the bracket, lost on Thursday in the round of 16 to Xavier's Hassan Abbas 9-7, 7-6, 6-7, 10-8 to fall into the consolation bracket.
The Lady Pirates finished second in the team standings with 17 points, just two behind champion Southern University. The Pirates finished with eight points, ending up in a tie for fifth with Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Prairie View A&M. Florida A&M successfully defended its men's title with 23 points.
Torrential rains forced the cancellation of Saturday and Sunday's action, leaving many consolation matches unfinished or unplayed.
