HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team picked up its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the season on Sunday, defeating Coppin State
3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-17) in Holland Hall.
The Lady Pirates (5-17, 1-1 MEAC) have won five of their last eight matches.
Hampton hit .345 as a team for the match, thanks to 38 kills and just nine errors in 84 total attacks. The Lady Pirates had 12 kills and just one error in the first set, hitting .355 as a team and taking advantage of 10 Coppin State errors in that set.
The Lady Pirates also hit .348 (11 kills, three errors in 23 attacks) in the second set and .333 (15 kills, five errors in 30 attacks) in the third set.
Coppin State (3-15, 0-2 MEAC) hit just .011 as a team, committing 20 errors to go along with 21 kills in 88 attacks. The Lady Eagles hit a team-best .207 (12 kills, six errors in 29 attacks) in the second set.
The Lady Eagles also held a 7-4 edge in service aces.
Senior
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) led Hampton with nine kills on the afternoon, leaving her 21 shy of 1,000 for her career. Freshman
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) added eight kills, hitting .400 thanks to just two errors in 15 attacks.
Junior
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) added six kills.
Junior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 33 of Hampton's 34 assists, while senior
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) had a team-high 11 digs on defense. Pagan and Armstrong each added seven digs for the Lady Pirates.
Ashley Saunders led Coppin State with 10 kills, hitting .207 thanks to just four errors in 29 attacks. Vanity Massey had a team-high three service aces and 10 digs on defense, while Haley Beechler had a team-high 17 assists.
