HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team fell in five sets to Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday in Holland Hall, after losing on the road to Coppin State on Friday night.
The Lady Pirates (6-22, 2-6 MEAC) gave UMES all it could handle on Sunday, taking the first two sets before the Lady Hawks ultimately came back to take a
3-2 (22-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-7) victory. Hampton hit .214 as a team, thanks to 52 kills and just 19 errors in 154 total attacks.
This was the first time Hampton had forced UMES to five sets since Aug. 30, 2003.
Hampton hit .444 (16 kills, no errors in 36 attacks) in the second set and .310 (11 kills, two errors in 29 attacks) in the first set. UMES combined for 15 errors in the first two sets, and the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set before the Lady Hawks mounted a comeback, going on a 10-3 run to take a 10-8 lead.
UMES, which hit .259 as a team for the match, hit .375 (14 kills, two errors in 32 attacks) in the fourth set and .368 (15 kills, one error in 38 attacks) in the third set. The Lady Hawks also held a 9-8 service aces advantage.
Senior
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) led the Lady Pirates with 16 kills, committing just four errors in 37 attacks for a .324 hitting percentage. Freshman
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) had 13 kills and 12 digs on defense for her second career double-double, while junior
Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Colombia) added 10 kills.
Freshman
Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria) led the team with a .438 hitting percentage, thanks to seven kills and no errors in 16 attacks. Harrison also led the team with three service aces.
Junior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 42 of Hampton's 48 assists, while senior
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia), playing in her first match after sustaining a concussion, recorded a team-high 18 digs on defense. Harrison added 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa and Maline Vaitai each led UMES with 18 kills, while Zoe Bowens added 13 kills and a team-high four service aces.
Coppin State defeated Hampton, playing without Suput, on Friday in Baltimore, Md.
3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23), thanks in large part to a .193 hitting percentage (53 kills, 25 errors in 145 attacks). The Lady Eagles also had a 10-3 edge in service aces.
The Lady Pirates hit .139 as a team, with 40 kills and 23 errors in 122 attacks. Hampton hit a team-best .333 (11 kills, three errors in 24 attacks) in the first set.
Coppin State picked up its first win over Hampton since Nov. 3, 2006.
Cordoba led the Lady Pirates with 12 kills, recording just two errors in 27 attacks for a team-high .370 hitting percentage. Pagan added nine kills to go along with two service aces, while Harrison recorded eight.
Elkayam led Hampton with 31 assists, while junior
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta), playing libero is Suput's absence, recorded a team-high 17 digs on defense. Pagan added a career-high 16 digs.
Ashley Saunders led Coppin State with 16 kills, while Christina Epps had 13 and Alexandria Malesick had 10.
