HAMPTON TENNIS ATTACKED BY EAGLES

STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Hampton men's and women's tennis teams each lost 7-0 to Georgia Southern University on Sunday morning at the Hanner Tennis Complex.

In singles play, Jovanna Sangria (Long Beach, Calif.) was defeated by GSU's Melanie Rolle 6-1, 6-3; Tabita Daolia lost straight matces to Kristi Kegerreis 6-0, 6-2; Maria Ycaza (Guayaquil, Ecuador) lost to Jessica Fuller 6-0, 6-2; and sophomore Barenese Myers (Beverly Hills, Calif.) lost her sets to Allison Beeler 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Sangria and Daolio lost the Lady Eagles' Christine Caforio and Kegerreis 8-4, and Myers and Ycaza lost their doubles match to Rolle and Fuller. 

The Lady Pirates (1-1) only traveled with five players, which made them default on one doubles match and one singles match before the start of play. 

The Pirates (1-1) also lost 7-0 to the Eagles (3-5).

In singles play, Nelio Mattos (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) lost to Jayraj Jadeja 1-6, 6-0, 1-0; Gellert Varga (Becej, Serbia) lost to Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos 6-0, 6-3; Edson Alves (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) was defeated by Gregory Bekkers 6-1, 6-0; Alvin Fludd came up short against Alain Garrido 6-1, 6-2, Kenneth Green lost to Matthijs Verdam 6-1, 6-1,and Marcelo Reda (Tremembe, Brazil) was beat in straight sets to Justin Flynn 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action, Mattos and Varga were defeated by Puigventos and Bekkers 8-7, while Jadeja and Flynn defeated Hampton's Alves and Fludd 8-2. Reda and Green lost to Garrido and Verdam 8-1.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action when they head to Sumter, S.C. on March 6-8 to face Bethune-Cookman, South Carolina State, Florida A&M and Winston-Salem State.
