CALDER WINS MEAC HEPTATHLON

Day 2 Results | Men's Decathlon | Women's Heptathlon

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams had another strong effort in the second day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Irwin Belk Track.

Sophomore Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) gave the Lady Pirates their second event title of the weekend, winning the women's heptathlon with a school-record 4,904 points; Kellie Wells held the old school record with 4,703 points. Calder, who led with 3,045 points after the first four events on Thursday, tallied 691 points in the long jump (5.47 meters) and 847 points in the 800-meter run (2:18.27).

Freshman Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,582 points. Senior Tashana Willock (Kingston, Jamaica) had 3,686 points to come in 14th.

Calder and Gainey also qualified for Saturday's final in the 400-meter hurdles; Calder recorded the third-fastest preliminary time with a 1:00.69, while Gainey ran a 1:02.75 to finish the preliminaries in seventh overall.

Junior Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) finished second in the long jump with a distance of 6.03 meters, giving the Lady Pirates eight more team points. Junior Jocelyn Watkins (Ellenwood, Ga.) picked up two more team points for the Lady Pirates, finishing seventh in the shot put with a distance of 12.58 meters. Senior Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) threw the shot put 11.91 meters to finish ninth.

Watkins also finished sixth in the javelin throw at 31.51 meters.

Senior Petrice Richards (Manchester, Jamaica) posted the top time in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash, running a season-best 11.51 in her heat. Senior Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) and Vassell also qualified for the 100-meter dash finals.

Richards, Vassell and McCorory also qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash, sweeping the top three spots in the preliminaries. Richards won her heat with a 23.53, while Vassell won her heat in 23.60 and McCorory ran a 23.63 to win her heat.

Seniors Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) and Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) advanced to the finals of the 800-meter run; Jones ran a 2:13.79 in her heat to come in second overall in the preliminary round, while Morris was third overall with a 2:14.72.

McCorory ran a 54.57 to come in third in the 400-meter dash preliminaries, advancing to the finals along with junior Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.), who ran the fourth-best preliminary time with a 56.04.

Junior Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) turned in the top preliminary time in the 110-meter hurdles, running a 13.99 to hold the top seed heading into Saturday's final.

Walker also finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 7.19 meters.

Junior Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump with a height of 2.03 meters.

Sophomore Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) and junior Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.) each advanced to Saturday's final in the 100-meter dash; Dixon won his heat with a 10.47, while Anderson ran a 10.51, the fifth-best overall time, to qualify.

Anderson also qualified for the 200-meter dash final, running a 20.92 in his preliminary heat.

Freshman Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) ran a 1:53.79 to come in eighth overall in the 800-meter run preliminaries, good enough to advance to Saturday's final.

Sophomore Bennett Taylor (Seattle, Wash.) finished sixth in the men's decathlon with 5,380 points, closing on a strong note by taking the 1,500-meter run with a 4:52.53. Junior Wayne Thomas (Chesterfield, Va.) finished eighth with 4,708 points.

Heading into Saturday's action, Norfolk State leads both the men's and women's team standings. The Lady Spartans lead with 67 points, with the Lady Pirates in second with 43 points. Norfolk State has 51.5 points on the men's side, where Hampton sits fifth with 12.5 points.
