PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University volleyball team will compete in the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Invitational on Saturday at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The Lady Pirates (2-16) will square off against North Carolina A&T at 12:30 p.m., before facing North Carolina Central at 3:30 p.m.
North Carolina A&T leads the all-time series against the Lady Pirates 22-1, though Hampton won the last meeting between the two teams last season – a
3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13) decision on Sept. 25.
North Carolina Central leads Hampton 16-7 all-time, though the Lady Pirates have won both meetings already this season. After beating the Eagles
3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 26-24) on Sept. 18, Hampton again beat NCCU
3-2 (25-14, 25-19, 16-25, 23-25, 17-15) this past Saturday in Durham, N.C.
Both of Hampton's wins this season have come against NCCU.
With a team-high 159 kills this season, senior
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) is 46 away from recording 1,000 for her career – which would make her just the fourth player in program history to reach that mark. Chavanca Hoskins (1,467), LaJaiah Miles (1,249) and Nicole Adams (1,244) all have reached that milestone.
Harrison's 2.79 kills per set leads the team, and her 191.0 points (3.35 per set) rank her fourth in the MEAC. She also leads the Lady Pirates with 11 service aces so far this season, and Harrison was named to the All-Tournament Team at both the NCCU Tournament this past weekend at the University of Buffalo Tournament on Sept. 10-11.
With 59 kills and just 23 errors in 144 total attacks, junior
Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Columbia) leads the team with a 2.50 hitting percentage, while fellow junior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) leads the way with 310 assists (7.21 per set).
Junior
Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) is averaging 5.88 assists per set, totaling 153 on the season. Chavez and freshman
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) each have 10 service aces for the Lady Pirates.
Despite only playing in 12 of Hampton's 18 matches due to injury, senior
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) leads the team in digs on defense with 138 – an average of 3.45 per set. Pagan is second on the team with 110 digs, averaging 2.04 per set.
North Carolina A&T (2-14) beat Savannah State 3-0 on Saturday, snapping a 10-match losing streak. The Aggies are led by freshman Jeana Daniels, who has 75 kills on the season – an average of 1.60 per set. Sophomore Andrea Evans leads the team with a .112 hitting percentage, recording 56 kills and 33 errors in 205 total attacks.
