PIRATES CONTINUE ROAD TRIP WITH TILT AT OHIO

ATHENS, Ohio – The Hampton University men's basketball team will continue its trek through the Nations of Coaches Classic on Tuesday, taking on the Bobcats of Ohio University at 7 p.m. in the Ohio University Convocation Center.

The Pirates (0-2), in their fourth season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., are in search of their first win of the season after falling 68-58 at Richmond this past Thursday to open the Nations of Coaches Classic. The Bobcats (3-0) are coming off a 72-50 win over Wofford at home on Sunday.

All three of Ohio's wins so far this season have been by double digits.

Redshirt-freshman guard/forward Dwight Meikle (Jonesboro, Ga.) picked up his first career double-double on Thursday at Richmond, pouring in 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the 68-58 loss. He was 4-for-8 from the floor against the Spiders, hitting both of his 3-pointers.

Meikle is tied with freshman guard Ke'Ron Brown (Savannah, Ga.) for the team lead in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game, and he is also pulling down a team-high 7.0 rebounds a night.

The Bobcats were 29-8 overall last season, finishing third in the MAC with a conference mark of 11-5, before winning the MAC Tournament and advancing to the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. In returning all five starters and 12 letterwinners from 2011-12, the Bobcats were picked to finish win the conference this season, their first under head coach Jim Christian.

Four Bobcats are in double figures in scoring through three games this season, led by senior forward Reggie Keely with 14.3 points per game – while senior guard D.J. Cooper is pouring in 14.0 points per contest. Keely is also pulling down a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game, along with redshirt-junior forward Jon Smith. Senior forward Ivo Baltic is averaging 13.0 points per game, and junior guard Nick Kellogg is averaging 12.7 points a night.

The Bobcats are averaging 79.7 points a game on offense, while giving up just 49.7 points a night.

Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates have never faced Ohio University; this will be the first meeting between the Pirates and the Bobcats.

Hampton is 3-6 all-time against teams currently in the MAC. Hampton is 1-3 against Akron; 1-1 against Eastern Michigan; 0-2 against Kent State; and 1-0 against Western Michigan. The Pirates have never faced Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, UMass, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Ohio, or Toledo.

The Pirates went 1-13 on the road last season, with that lone win coming at Florida A&M, 74-59, on Feb. 25. For his career, head coach Ed Joyner is 15-28 on the road after Hampton's season-opening loss at William & Mary and a 68-58 loss at Richmond this past Thursday.
