FOOTBALL TO CLOSE OUT SEASON AGAINST RIVAL HOWARD

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University football team will close out the 2013 season on Saturday with the Battle for the Real HU, taking on rival Howard at 1 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium.

The Pirates will also celebrate Senior Day.

The Pirates (4-7, 4-3 MEAC), in their fifth season under head coach Donovan Rose, fell 42-12 at nationally-ranked Bethune-Cookman this past Saturday, while the Bison (5-6, 3-4 MEAC), under interim head coach Rayford Petty, beat non-conference foe Texas Southern 40-6 this past Saturday.

Junior Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) is currently averaging 23.8 yards per return so far this season, ranking seventh in the MEAC. He had 91 return yards against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 14, including a 61-yard return in the second half. He is also third in the MEAC in all-purpose yards with 115.3 per contest, and he is sixth in the MEAC in rushing with 57.4 yards per game on the ground.

Washington has also recorded at least 100 rushing yards in three of his last five games – including a career-best 137 yards on 15 carries in a 30-27 loss at Morgan State on Nov. 3.

So far this season, senior Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) ranks fourth in the MEAC in receptions, averaging 4.0 per game. Chisholm is also sixth in receiving yards per game, with 42.9 per contest, and his 94.1 all-purpose yards per contest are the sixth-best average in the MEAC.

Senior linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) is one of the bright spots of the Pirates defense so far this season, ranking second in the MEAC with 11.4 tackles per game. He has 114 total tackles so far this season (47 of them solo efforts), and Tyler has recorded double-digit tackles in seven of Hampton's 11 games – including a season-high 17 stops on Sept. 21 at Coastal Carolina.

Tyler has 366 total tackles for his career after recording 11 stops this past Saturday against North Carolina Central, which currently ranks him second in program history; he is 23 tackles shy of the all-time record of 389 set by Gareth Bonds.

Senior defensive end Carvin Johnson (New Orleans, La.) is currently fourth in the MEAC in tackles, averaging 10.2 per game, and he is second on the team with 112 tackles so far this season – 66 of which were solo efforts.

Sophomore linebacker Joshua Thorne (Oxon Hill, Md.) is tied for seventh in the MEAC in tackles, averaging 9.2 per contest. He is third on the team with 101 tackles so far this season, 55 of which are solo efforts.

Sophomore defensive end Miles Grooms (Richmond, Va.) has been a force in the backfield this season, currently tied for the lead in the MEAC in tackles for loss (18.5 for 88 yards) and tied for second in sacks (9.5 total, 0.86 per game). He had a team-high 3.5 sacks in a 30-7 win over Delaware State on Oct. 26, and he leads the Pirates with 15 quarterback hurries and four forced fumbles so far this season.

The Pirates are 47-41-1 all-time against Howard, and the Bison have won the last two meetings – including a 20-10 defeat of the Pirates in Washington, D.C. last season. Prior to 2011, Hampton had won 14 straight meetings with the Bison. The two teams last met at Armstrong Stadium in 2011, with Howard escaping with a 10-7 victory.

Hampton is 16-14-1 against the Bison all-time at home.

The Pirates are 198-168-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the MEAC, and sit 4-3 in conference play this season. Hampton is 9-10 against Bethune-Cookman; 25-14 against Delaware State; 8-13 against Florida A&M; 47-41-1 against Howard; 24-37-2 against Morgan State; 25-25-1 against Norfolk State; 26-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 18-6 against North Carolina Central; 5-0 against Savannah State; and 11-7 against South Carolina State.

For his career as head coach, Rose is 15-9 at Armstrong Stadium. The Pirates are 3-1 at home so far this season, having fallen 30-27 to Tennessee Tech back on Sept. 14 before beating North Carolina A&T 31-26 on Oct. 12, taking care of Delaware State 30-7 back on Oct. 26, and beating North Carolina Central 29-21 on Nov. 9.
