HAMDEN, Conn. – The Hampton University men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker Wednesday night at the TD Bank Sports Center, as Quinnipiac stole a last-second 71-68 win.
The Pirates fell to 2-2 on the season.
Senior forward
Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) led the Pirates with 14 points on 7-for-13 shooting, while also grabbing a team-high five rebounds, blocking three shots, and snaring in four steals. Sophomore guard
Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) added 13 points and five assists.
The Pirates led 65-57 with 5:07 left to play after a fast-break layup from Maxwell, but Quinnipiac responded with an 11-0 run, taking a 68-65 lead with 55 seconds left after Ousmane Drame hit two free throws.
Senior guard
Ramon Mercado (Chicago, Ill.) tied the game with a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, but Umar Shannon hit a trey of his own with one second left to give the Bobcats the win in a game the Pirates controlled for much of the night.
After some early back-and-forth, the Pirates took a 13-10 lead with 12:24 left in the first half on a 3-pointer from sophomore guard
Brian Darden (Hampton, Va.). Quinnipiac cut that lead to 13-12, before the Pirates went on a 12-4 run to take a 25-16 lead on a Powers layup at the 7:08 mark.
Maxwell dunked on a fast break with 6:11 left in the first half to give Hampton its first double-digit lead of the night, 27-17, and the Pirates later led 35-23 with 3:23 left in the half on a jumper from sophomore forward
Dionte Adams (Charlotte, N.C.).
Quinnipiac ended the half with a 9-3 lead to cut Hampton's lead to 38-32 at the break.
Powers had nine points at the intermission, while Maxwell had eight points, four rebounds, and three steals.
Hampton opened the second half on a 7-1 run, taking a 45-33 lead with 15:49 to play after a free throw from Adams. The Bobcats then went on a 13-5 run, cutting the gap to 50-46 with 9:53 left. The Pirates then scored 13 of the next 20 points to take a 63-53 lead with 6:45 remaining after a pair of free throws from freshman center
Phillip Reed (Oxnard, Calif.).
The Pirates shot 40.7 percent (24-for-59) from the floor, despite making just four of 14 3-pointers and 16-for-23 from the charity stripe. Quinnipiac (3-1) shot 36.5 percent (23-for-63) from the floor and had 21 second-chance points.
The Bobcats edged the Pirates 50-35 on the glass.
The Pirates will return to action on Sunday, when they head to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State to kick off the Corpus Christi Challenge.
