HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – After a brief hiatus, the Hampton University men's basketball team will hit the road on Wednesday in search of its fourth straight win, taking on Northern Kentucky at the Bank of Kentucky Center at 7 p.m.
The Pirates (5-5) picked up their third straight win back on Dec. 9, beating conference foe Bethune-Cookman 85-52. Four Pirates scored in double figures, led by 17 points off the bench from redshirt-freshman guard
Lawrence Cooks (Charlotte, N.C.) and another 16 points from sophomore guard
Reggie Price (Charlotte, N.C.).
Senior forward
Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds, while sophomore guard
Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) added 11 points and a team-high four assists.
Northern Kentucky (2-7) snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday with an 87-71 win over Chattanooga to kick off a three-game homestand. The Norse, in just their second year as a Div. I program and a member of the Atlantic Sun, are in their 10th season overall under head coach Dave Bezold. In 2012-13, the Norse made their Div. I debut by going 11-16 overall and 9-9 in the A-Sun.
So far this season, junior guard Jordan Jackson leads the Norse in scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game while also grabbing a team-high 4.9 rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Tyler White is averaging 10.9 points per game.
Hampton is 0-1 against Northern Kentucky, as the Pirates fell 54-52 to the Norse last season at the HU Convocation Center. This will be the Pirates' first trip to the Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights, Ky.
Hampton is 0-2 all-time against schools currently in the Atlantic Sun Conference, having gone 0-1 against both Northern Kentucky and USC Upstate. The Pirates have never faced East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida, or Stetson.
The Pirates went 7-8 on the road last season, and they closed out the regular season by winning their last six road contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 21-37 overall in true road games away from the Convocation Center after beating Saint Peter's 64-59 on Nov. 12, falling 71-68 at Quinnipiac, falling 81-67 at Missouri State on Nov. 24, and falling 69-40 at Virginia on Nov. 26.
Hampton is 1-3 on the road this season.
