PIRATES FALL TO NORTHERN KENTUCKY IN OVERTIME

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Hampton University men's basketball team dropped its first overtime game of the season Wednesday night, falling 69-67 to Northern Kentucky at the Bank of Kentucky Center.

The loss snapped the Pirates' three-game winning streak.

Sophomore guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) led the Pirates with 16 points and five assists, while senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) added 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting and grabbed six rebounds.

Sophomore forward Jervon Pressley (Charlotte, N.C.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in his Hampton debut.

Northern Kentucky struck first in the overtime session, before Maxwell hit two free throws at the 4:36 mark to put the Pirates up 61-60. Pressley added a layup with 3:36 left to put Hampton on top 63-62, and Pressley's tip-in with 2:18 to play gave Hampton a 65-64 lead.

Maxwell's jumper with 1:40 left gave Hampton a 67-65 lead.

But Northern Kentucky scored the next four points, going up 69-67 on a last-second jumper from Jordan Jackson.

Northern Kentucky led 15-5 at the 11:40 mark of the first half, but the Pirates answered with a 9-1 run to cut the gap to 16-14 on a free throw from Powers with 8:01 left in the half. Sophomore guard Dwight Meikle (Baltimore, Md.) gave Hampton a 25-24 lead with a jumper with 47 seconds left in the half.

Senior guard Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.) sent the Pirates into the half with a 28-26 lead after hitter a trey at the buzzer.

Hampton opened the second half with a 13-3 run, taking a 41-29 lead with 14:12 left in regulation after a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Brian Darden (Hampton, Va.). Powers hit a jumper at the 12:16 mark to put the Pirates up 45-34.

But Northern Kentucky went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 47-44 with 7:59 left, before Hampton scored the next five points and took a 52-44 lead with 7:06 left in regulation after another trey from Mercado.

The Norse out-scored the Pirates 15-7 over the remainder of the second half, tying the game at 59-59 with 41 seconds left on a free throw from Jackson.

The Pirates (5-6) shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) from the floor and hit seven of their 22 3-pointers (31.8 percent). Hampton hit just 58.8 percent of its free throws (10-for-17), but the Pirates held a 40-37 advantage on the glass.

Northern Kentucky (3-7) shot 37.0 percent (20-for-54) from the floor and made seven of its 21 3-pointers (33.3 percent). The Norse made 31 trips to the free throw line – including 20 in the first half – converting 22 times for a 71.0 percent clip.

Jackson led Northern Kentucky with 21 points.

The Pirates will return to action on Saturday, taking on James Madison in the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va. in the Governor's Classic at 3 p.m. The game will be televised live on the NBC Sports Network.
