Junior guard Pendarvis Williams led the way with 17 points, while redshirt-junior guard Malcolm Hawkins added 16 points and junior center Brandon Goode chipped in 12 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Spartans went 26-10 last season, finishing second in the MEAC at 13-3 and taking the MEAC tournament title for the first time in program history, before upsetting No. 2 seed Missouri in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Norfolk State, in its sixth season under head coach Anthony Evans, returns just one starter from last season. The Spartans were picked to finish fourth in the MEAC in 2012-13.

Williams is the team's leading scorer, pouring in 14.0 points per game, while Hawkins is averaging 12.5 points per game. Freshman forward Rashid Gaston is the Spartans' top rebounder, pulling down 6.1 boards a contest coming off the bench.

The Spartans are averaging 67.5 points a game on offense, while giving up 67.0 points per contest.

Since moving up to the Div. I level in 1995, the Pirates are 19-17 against Norfolk State, though the Spartans won the first meeting this season with a 74-67 victory at Echols Hall. Hampton has won four of the last seven meetings overall, though, and the Pirates are 9-6 against the rival Spartans at home.

Hampton is 206-122 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including a 6-10 mark in the conference last season. So far this season, Hampton is 7-3 in MEAC play and sits fourth in the conference. The Pirates have faced every team currently in the MEAC at least once, including newcomers North Carolina Central and Savannah State.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates have won two regular-season conference titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).

For his career as a head coach, Joyner is 25-17 at home, and the Pirates were 6-5 at home last season – beating William & Mary, High Point, Howard, South Carolina State, Morgan State and Maryland Eastern Shore, while losing to Savannah State, Norfolk State, Coppin State, Delaware State, and North Carolina Central.
