DURHAM, N.C. – A flurry of activity in the second quarter proved the difference on Saturday afternoon at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium, as North Carolina Central pulled away and beat the Hampton University football team 47-13.
The Pirates fell to 2-8 overall and 1-5 on the season.
Freshman quarterback
Jerrell Antoine (Orlando, Fla.) completed 17 of his 33 passes for a career-high 171 yards and a touchdown, while senior running back
Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) ran 10 times for 84 yards and a score.
Redshirt sophomore wideout
Rashawn Proctor (Hampton, Va.) had 81 yards on five catches.
Junior linebacker
Joshua Thorne (Oxon Hill, Md.) tied his career high with 19 tackles, while freshman linebacker
Hayden Gregory (Nashville, Tenn.) added 11 tackles.
The Eagles (5-5, 4-2 MEAC) held a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to a 21-yard pass from Malcolm Bell to Quentin Atkinson. But the Pirates answered with 8:22 left in the second quarter, capping off a 9-play, 88-yard drive with a 4-yard run from Washington to tie the score at 7-7.
N.C. Central scored on the ensuing possession on a 22-yard pass from Bell to Deyonta Wright, taking a 14-7 lead. It started a run of 24 unanswered points to close out the half for the Eagles.
Hampton's next possession ended with a punt, which Mykeal Martin blocked and scooped up for a 20-yard score. The Eagles scored again on the ensuing possession, as Cameron Hughes intercepted Antoine and ran it back 55 yards to give N.C. Central a 27-7 lead.
Eric Fenton added a 28-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the second quarter to give the Eagles a 30-7 halftime lead.
Fenton also hit a 33-yard field goal with 7:10 left in the third quarter to grow the lead to 33-7.
Bell added a 1-yard run with 2:52 left in the quarter to give the Eagles a 40-7 lead.
The Pirates got back on the board with 11:32 left in the contest, when Antoine found redshirt sophomore wideout
Twarn Mixson (Charlotte, N.C.) from five yards out. The two-point try failed, and Hampton cut the Eagles' lead to 40-13.
The Eagles scored for the last time with 2:33 left, when Andre Clark ran in from 17 yards to put N.C. Central up 47-13.
