VOLLEYBALL LOSES HARD-FOUGHT MATCH TO UMES

HAMPTON, Va. – The same grit and fight the Hampton University volleyball team used in Friday night's win was on display again on Saturday in Holland Hall, but Maryland Eastern Shore came away with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 32-30) win.

The Lady Pirates fell to 1-18 overall and 1-5 in MEAC play on the season.

Reeana Richardson had 14 kills to lead the Lady Pirates, while Lena Washington added 10 kills, hitting a team-best .333, to go along with a team-high 14 digs on defense. Allysa Medina chipped in nine kills and added 11 digs.

Kyndall Nicholas had a team-high four blocks. Brianna Lilly added 39 assists and three blocks.

Hampton matched its season best by hitting .217 as a team for the second straight match. The Lady Pirates had 40 kills and just 14 errors in 120 total attacks.

UMES (16-3, 5-1 MEAC) hit .278 for the match and held an 11-3 edge in service aces.

Both teams had eight blocks.

UMES jumped out to a 10-5 lead to open the first set before a 4-2 Hampton spurt cut the gap to 12-9 following a kill from Medina. The Hawks responded with a 6-1 run to take an 18-10 lead, and UMES later led 21-13.

But a kill from Washington kicked off a 7-0 run – a run that ended when Medina recorded a kill that cut UMES' lead to 21-20. The Hawks scored three of the next four points to force set point at 24-21, but the Lady Pirates got a kill from Nicholas and a kill from Richardson to cut the lead to 24-23.

UMES scored on the next point to take the first set.

The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .341 (17 kills, three errors in 41 attacks) in the first set.

That momentum carried into the second set, which UMES used to jump out to an 8-1 lead. Hampton had clawed its way back to cut the lead to 10-6 after a kill from Washington, before UMES scored seven of the next eight points to take a 17-7 lead.

UMEs hit a team-best .324 in the second set, cruising to the 25-12 win to go up 2-0 in the match.

Even though the Hawks led 6-5 early in the third set, Hampton scored seven of the next 11 points to take a 12-10 lead after a kill from Nicholas. A service error by Hampton tied the set at 14-14, before the Lady Pirates used a 3-0 spurt to go up 17-14 and force UMES into a timeout.

UMES went on a 4-1 spurt out of that break to tie the set at 18-18, before a 3-1 Hampton spurt put the Lady Pirates up 21-19. A kill from Richardson later in the set gave the Lady Pirates a 23-22 lead – before UMES scored the next two points to force match point.

Six times, UMES had match point within its sights – and six times, the Lady Pirates staved off defeat.

Richardson tied the set at 30-30 with her 14th kill of the night, before UMES scored the last two points to take the set, the match, and the season series.

Zuzana Ondruskova led the Hawks with 14 kills.
