WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Hampton University football team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon at Zable Stadium, as William & Mary won 40-7.
The Pirates fell to 4-4 overall on the season.
David Watford completed 11 of his 28 yards for 123 yards and a touchdown – extending his streak of eight straight games with a touchdown pass this season. Four of those completions went to
Shakim Alonzo for 38 yards.
Twarn Mixson caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Charles Owens led the Pirates defense with nine tackles, two of which were for a loss.
Chaka Diarrassouba and
Tyrone Ward each had eight tackles.
Keith McAfee had Hampton's only sack on defense.
In a first quarter that saw both teams struggle to move the ball, the nationally-ranked Tribe (5-2) held a 9-0 lead after a trio of field goals – from 37, 25, and 47 yards – from Nick Dorka.
The first touchdown of the game came with 12:07 left in the second quarter, when Kendell Anderson capped off a 5-play, 48-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put William & Mary up 16-0.
Hampton followed with a three-and-out, before the Tribe went 61 yards in 10 plays before Steve Cluley found DeVonte Dedmon from 17 yards out to put them up 23-0 with 6:32 left in the first half.
Mikal Abdur-Saboor ran into the endzone from three yards out with 43 seconds left in the half, capping off a 10-play, 69-yard drive that sent William & Mary into the locker room at the half with a 30-0 lead.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard for the only time with 4:19 left in the third quarter, when Watford connected with Mixson for a 48-yard touchdown pass – Mixson's seventh of the season – to cap off a 6-play, 80-yard drive.
Cluley put William & Mary on top 37-7 with a 14-yard run with 16 seconds left in the third quarter.
A Dorka 27-yard field goal – his fourth of the game – put the Tribe up 40-7 with 10:31 left in the game.
