ELON, N.C. – The Hampton University softball team picked up its first win of the season in the Elon Softball Tournament, which took place Saturday and Sunday at Hunt Softball Park.
The Lady Pirates are now 1-9 on the season.
Game 1: Central Connecticut State 3, Hampton 1Saturday's action opened with a 3-1 loss to Central Connecticut, even though the Lady Pirates led 1-0 after the bottom of the third inning, when junior
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) scored on an error following a single to right center field from junior
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.).
But Central Connecticut answered with a three-run home run in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.
Freshman
Allyson Babinsack (Hampton, Va.) went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Hampton on offense, while senior
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out three batters in sixth innings of work.
Game 2: Hampton 1, Lafayette 0Babinsack picked up her first career win as a pitcher, striking out three in seven innings and giving up just three hits. Hampton had just two hits in Saturday's second game, but the Lady Pirates won in walkoff fashion.
Sophomore
Taylor Clark (Queen Creek, Ariz.) led off the inning with a single, before advancing to second base on a sacrifice and then to third later in the inning on a groundout.
Clark later scored the game's only run on a wild pitch.
Game 3: Central Connecticut State 10, Hampton 5The Lady Pirates kicked off Sunday by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, loading the bases before McCoy scored the game's first run on a bases-loaded walk to freshman
Jada Fields (Woodland Park, N.J.).
Redshirt junior
Raenelle Taylor (Aquasco, Md.) added an RBI single to give the Lady Pirates a 3-0 lead.
But Central Connecticut answered with eight runs in the bottom of the frame, taking an 8-3 lead after one inning of play. Central Connecticut later added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 10-3 lead.
McCoy scored in the top of the fifth after Fields reached on an error, before Taylor walked later in the inning with the bases loaded, pushing Babinsack across to cut the lead to 10-5.
Game 4: Elon 4, Hampton 3 (nine innings)After Elon scored a run in the bottom of the first inning in Sunday's second game, the Lady Pirates tied the game in the top of the second following a home run to left field from sophomore
Danielle Budden (Jackson, N.J.), her first of the season.
Elon scored a run each in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead.
McCoy scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from junior
Jessica Reiman (Massillon, Ohio), cutting Elon's lead to 3-2, before an RBI single from Babinsack in the seventh inning to score senior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) and tie the game at 3-3.
Elon won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly.
Wilkins and Babinsack each had two hits to lead the Lady Pirates.
Jackson and junior
Jecoliah Pratt (Orlando, Fla.) combined for six strikeouts in the circle.
