VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES SECOND DAY OF ECU CLASSIC

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Hampton University closed out the East Carolina Classic on Saturday at Minges Coliseum with a four-set loss to William & Mary and a three-set loss to Western Carolina.
 
Kyndall Nicholas was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
William & Mary 3, Hampton 1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-10)
The Lady Pirates (0-9) opened the match by taking their first set of the season, hitting .175 (13 kills, six errors in 40 attacks) in the process while holding the Tribe to .000 hitting. Reeana Richardson and Allysa Medina each notched double digit kills: 12 for Richardson and 11 for Medina.
 
Medina also had a team-high 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Mallory Beard added 11 digs on defense.
 
Alexandra Erhart had a team-high 16 assists and two service aces.
 
Nicholas led the way at the net with six blocks, while Lena Washington and Tatyana Thomas each had five blocks.
 
William & Mary opened the first set by taking a 6-2 lead, before the Lady Pirates went on a 10-3 run – taking a 12-9 lead after a kill from Richardson. Nicholas and Medina teamed on a block later in the set to put Hampton up 15-11, before a Richardson gave the Lady Pirates a 16-12 lead.
 
The Tribe fought back to cut the lead to 20-18, before the Lady Pirates closed the set on a 5-2 run to win the set 25-20.
 
Hampton then took a 7-5 lead early in the second set, before the Tribe scored the next three points to take an 8-7 lead. The Lady Pirates answered with a 3-1 spurt of their own to take a 10-9 lead before William & Mary went on a 4-0 run to go up 13-10.
 
The Lady Pirates then went on a 6-1 run – a run in which Erhart had both of her aces – to take a 16-14 lead. An ace from Medina later in the set put Hampton up 18-15.
 
But William & Mary closed the set on a 10-4 run to tie the match at 1-1.
 
The Tribe rode that momentum into the third set, taking a 10-1 lead. The Lady Pirates responded with an 8-3 run, cutting the lead to 13-9 after Washington and Thomas paired on a block.
 
Hampton later cut the Tribe's lead to 16-12.
 
But William & Mary closed the set on a 9-1 run to take the set and go up 2-1 in the match.
 
A kill from Medina early in the fourth set tied the score at 6-6, before the Tribe scored six unanswered points to take a 12-6 lead. A kill from Richardson cut the lead to 13-8 before William & Mary went on an 8-1 run to take a 21-9 lead.
 
Medina ended that run with a kill before the Tribe scored the last four points to take the match.
 
Western Carolina 3, Hampton 0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-21)
Richardson notched a career-high 13 kills in Saturday's second match, while Medina and Beard each had a team-high 13 digs on defense. Medina also had seven kills and a team-high three service aces.
 
Erhart had 17 assists and tied for the team high with two blocks.
 
As a team, the Lady Pirates held a 4-2 edge in blocks.
 
Back-to-back points early in the first set from the Lady Pirates tied the score at 4-4, before Western Carolina went on a 10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead. Hampton answered with three straight points to cut the margin to 14-9.
 
After Erhart cut the lead to 15-11, Western Carolina went on a 4-1 spurt to take a 19-12 lead.
 
Another 3-0 spurt from the Lady Pirates cut the lead to 19-15 on a kill from Richardson, but Western Carolina closed the set with a 6-1 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
 
Western Carolina hit .457 in the second set, one in which the team held an 11-5 lead after going on a 6-0 run. A kill from Nicholas cut the lead to 15-8 later in the set, before Western Carolina went on a 7-1 run to take a 22-9 lead.
 
A 4-2 spurt from the Lady Pirates cut the lead to 24-13 on another Nicholas kill, but Western Carolina scored the next point to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 7-0 lead to open the third set, culminating in back-to-back aces from Medina. Western Carolina then went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 9-8, before Hampton went on a 5-1 run to go up 14-9 after a kill from Medina.
 
A kill from Richardson later in the set put the Lady Pirates up 17-14, before Western Carolina went on an 8-3 run to take a 22-20 lead. Washington ended the run with a kill, bringing Hampton within one, but Western Carolina scored the last three points to take the set and the match.
