VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES SECOND DAY AT N.C. STATE

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team completed the second day of the N.C. State Doubletree Cary Classic on Saturday at Carmichael Gym, losing to both N.C. State and Campbell in straight sets.
 
Lena Washington was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
N.C. State 3, Hampton 0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-13)
Asya Patterson led the Lady Pirates with seven kills against Wolfpack, hitting a team-best .182. Reeana Richardson had six kills in the match. Summer Humes had a team-high seven digs on defense to go along with 17 assists, and Kyndall Nicholas had six digs.
 
Alexandra Erhart had five blocks, while Patterson and Tatyana Thomas each had two.
 
N.C. State hit .397 for the match, including a match-best .542 in the second set. Hampton held a 5-2 lead early in the first set after block from Richardson and Kennedy Kenney capped off a quick 3-0 spurt. An ace from Patterson later gave Hampton (0-13) a 7-3 lead.
 
But the Wolfpack answered with an 11-1 run to take a 14-8 lead before Washington ended the run with a kill. That kicked off a 5-2 spurt for the Lady Pirates, who cut the lead to 16-13 after another kill from Richardson.
 
N.C. State answered with a 9-1 run to take the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
 
That momentum carried into the early moments of the second set, as N.C. State jumped out to a 6-3 lead. The run ended on the next point, as the Lady Pirates cut the lead to 6-4, before the Wolfpack went on a 15-3 run to take a 21-7 lead.
 
Hampton scored three of the next four points, cutting the lead to 22-10 after a kill from Medina, an ace from Olivera Stojilovic, and a block from Washington and Stojilovic, but N.C. State scored the next three points to take the set.
 
A kill from Washington early in the third set gave the Lady Pirates a 3-1 lead before N.C. State scored the next two points to tie the set. Hampton responded by scoring the next two points – taking a 5-3 lead after a block from Washington and Kenney.
 
A kill from Washington later in the set put Hampton up 8-6.
 
N.C. State responded with a 13-1 run to take a 19-9 lead before Richardson ended the run with a kill. But the Wolfpack went on a 3-0 spurt after that to take a 22-10 lead. A block from Kenney cut the lead to 22-12, but N.C. State ended the set with a 3-1 spurt to clinch the set and the match.
 
Perry Ramsey led N.C. State with 12 kills.
 
Campbell 3, Hampton 0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-12)
Washington and Richardson each had nine kills to lead the Lady Pirates in their final match of the afternoon, and Richardson added eight digs on defense. Mallory Beard had a team-high nine digs on defense and Medina added eight digs.
 
Richardson hit a team-best .208 for the match, while Washington hit .194.
 
Erhart had 22 assists and an ace.
 
A kill from Washington early in the first set cut Campbell's lead to 5-4, before Campbell answered with a 5-1 run to take a 10-5 lead. Hampton scored the next two points, cutting the lead to 10-7 after a kill from Washington and a block from Washington and Nicholas.
 
But Campbell answered with a 5-1 run, taking a 15-8 lead. The Lady Pirates responded with a 4-1 run of their own, cutting the lead to 16-12 after Kenney and Richardson paired up on a block.
 
A kill from Richardson later cut Campbell's lead to 17-13, but Campbell ended the set on an 8-2 run to take the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
 
After Campbell took an early 4-2 lead in the second set, the Lady Pirates answered a 5-1 run to take a 7-5 lead after another kill from Washington. Another 4-1 spurt later in the set gave the Lady Pirates a 10-7 lead.
 
Hampton later led 12-8 before Campbell went on a 7-3 run to tie the set at 15-15. Hampton then went on a 4-1 run to take a 19-16 lead, but the Fightin' Camels scored the next six points to take a 22-16 lead.
 
The Lady Pirates cut the lead to 22-21, but Campbell scored the last three points to take the set.
 
Campbell rode that momentum through the beginning of the third set, taking a 10-1 lead. Hampton then went on a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 11-5 after a block from Washington and Thomas before Campbell scored the next four points to go up 15-5.
 
Hampton scored the next three points to cut the gap to 15-8 before Campbell went on a 5-1 run to go up 20-9. Washington ended the run with a kill, cutting the lead to 20-10, and Richardson had two late kills that cut Campbell's lead to 23-12.
 
But Campbell scored the last two points to take the set and the match.
 
Rachel Harty led Campbell with 10 kills.
