HAMPTON, VA. – The Hampton University volleyball team dropped a home Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division matchup on Sunday to Maryland Eastern Shore 3-1 as the Hawks won 21-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-13.
Reeana Richardson had 23 kills and nine digs to lead Hampton. Freshman
Micah Leavell added 11 kills, four digs and two aces, while
Kyndall Nicholas added six hills.
Brianna Lilly had 43 assists to lead Hampton in that category while
Summer Humes had a career high 14 digs.
In the first set, Hampton held a 9-6 lead after a Lilly service ace before the Hawks scored eight of the next nine points to lead 14-10 after an attack error. The Lady Pirates rallied for an 18-17 lead on a Humes ace as the teams proceeded to tie the score four times with the last being on a Mere Sera kill at 21-all. Hampton used kills from Leavell, Nicholas and an ace from
Lena Washington to help secure the first set 25-21.
The second set saw Hampton hold the advantage throughout the majority of the set. The Lady Pirates took as much as a seven-point lead on an attack error to go up 18-11 and held a 24-19 advantage following another attack error by the guests. The Hawks closed out the set with the last seven points to even the match with a 26-24 win.
From there, the Hawks soared into overdrive closing the third set with seven of the last eight points to win 25-17. In the fourth it ended nearly the same as the Hawks scored nine of the last 10 points to win 25-13.
Hampton returns to action on Friday night when they tangle with Howard at Holland Hall starting at 6 pm.
