BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University men's basketball team struggled from the floor at the SECU Arena on Friday evening en route to a 62-48 loss to Robert Morris as part of the 2016 Barclays Classic.
The Pirates are now 1-4 on the season.
Devon Oakley and
Branden Aughburns each poured in nine points to lead the Pirates, who were held to three assists on 15 field goals on the evening. Aughburns also had a team-high six rebounds, while Oakley and
Akim Mitchell each added five boards.
The Pirates shot just 32.6 percent (15-for-46) from the floor and 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) from 3-point range.
Hampton did hold a 32-29 edge on the glass.
The Colonials opened the game with a 9-2 spurt, taking immediate control.
Kalin Fisher cut the lead to five, 11-6, with a three at the 13:37 mark, but Robert Morris responded with a 9-0 run to take a 20-6 lead with 9:53 left in the half.
Isaiah Still gave the Colonels their largest lead of the half, 35-15, with a trey at the 2:36 mark.
Robert Morris led 36-20 at the half.
An 11-5 spurt to open the second half gave the Colonels a 47-25 lead, but the Pirates fought back – scoring the next 11 points to cut the lead to 47-36 after
Lawrence Cooks hit a pair of free throws with 9:13 left to play.
Aughburns then hit a jumper at the 5:09 mark – and a free throw at the 4:41 mark – to cut the deficit to single digits, with Robert Morris leading 51-42.
Imani Miller's free throws with 2:31 remaining cut the lead to 55-47.
But the Colonels closed the game on a 7-1 run, clinching a game in which they never trailed.
Robert Morris (1-5) shot 45.2 percent (19-for-42) from the floor – including a 53.6 percent clip in the second half. The Colonials made seven of their 16 3-pointers.
Still led three Colonials in double figures with 16 points.
