PIRATES DEFEAT HORNETS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

DOVER, Del. – With four players in double figures, and yet another double-double from Quinton Chievous, the Hampton University men's basketball team upended Delaware State 82-72 Monday night in Memorial Hall.

The Pirates (16-9, 11-2 MEAC) picked up their third straight win.

Chievous led the Pirates with 21 points and 19 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season, while Reginald Johnson, Jr. added 16 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Brian Darden chipped in 11 points and dished out five assists, and Dionte Adams added 10 points.

Darden is seven points shy of 1,000 for his career.

The Pirates shot 44.6 percent (25-for-66) from the floor – including a 50.0 percent clip (11-for-22) in the second half – and hit eight of 23 3-pointers (34.8 percent). Hampton was 72.7 percent (24-for-33) from the free throw line and dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Hornets 48-28.

The Pirates opened the game with a 17-6 run, taking that lead at the 13:05 mark after a 3-point play from Adams. The Hornets used an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 19-14, before the Pirates responded with 11 unanswered points – going up 30-14 after a Johnson 3-pointer at the 5:36 mark.

Hampton's largest lead of the half came with 39 seconds left, when Akim Mitchell's fastbreak layup gave the Pirates a 36-18 lead.

The Pirates led 36-20 at the break.

Johnson had eight points at the half, while Chievous had 10 boards.

Adams hit a pair of free throws with 15:54 left in the second half to give the Pirates a 45-25 lead – their largest of the game – before Delaware State used much of the second half to chisel away at the lead. A Kavon Walker three with 5:44 remaining cut Hampton's lead to 64-59.

But Chievous, who had 19 points in the second half, answered with two free throws and a layup, giving the Pirates a 68-59 lead with 4:39 left to play.

A 5-1 Delaware State spurt cut the lead to 69-64 with 3:07 left, but Johnson answered with a layup that put the Pirates back on top by seven. The Hornets would never get any closer than within six for the rest of the contest, and freshman Kalin Fisher dunked with 20 seconds left to put Hampton up 82-71.

Morgan's free throw with 19 seconds left was all Delaware State could muster in the closing seconds.

Delaware State (7-21, 5-8 MEAC) shot 40.3 percent (25-for-62) from the floor, thanks to a 50.5 percent effort (17-for-33) in the second half. The Hornets struggled from the floor in the first half, going just 8-for-29 (27.6 percent).

Devin Morgan led the Hornets with 31 points.
