SOFTBALL DROPS TWO TO CLOSE OUT LADY PIRATES CLASSIC

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team closed out the Lady Pirates Classic on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium with a pair of losses, falling 8-1 to Quinnipiac before losing 12-1 to Princeton.

The Lady Pirates are now 4-4 on the season.

The first three innings of the Quinnipiac game went by without either team scoring, before the Bobcats put two on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Hampton answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, cutting the lead to 2-1 when senior Diamond Ponds scored on an errant throw after sophomore Allyson Babinsack reached on a fielder's choice.

Quinnipiac added a run in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead, before Keilani Finley hit a pair of home runs – a two-run shot in the sixth and a three-run blast in the seventh – to put the Bobcats up 8-1.

Senior Taylor McCoy and junior Kayla DeSchepper each had two hits.

Babinsack struck out six in 6.1 innings of work.

In the second game, Princeton took control early with seven runs in the top of the first inning, with Haley Hineman's double the only extra-base hit of the frame. The Tigers then went up 9-0 in the second inning after a two-run home run from Alex Viscusi.

Three more runs in the fourth put Princeton up 12-0.

Hampton got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, when freshman Allie Hotetz hit her first career home run, a solo shot to left center field.

That was Hampton's only hit of the game.

The Lady Pirates will be home again this Friday through Sunday to host the Hampton Invitational. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
