JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The 2016 Hampton University women's soccer season opened Saturday in the steamy heat of Jersey City, N.J. as the Lady Pirates and Saint Peter's played to a 2-all tie at Jaroschak Field in the season opener for both teams.
Hampton (0-0-1) opened the scoring in the third minute as Kiley Barnes found the back of the net. In the 36th minute, Courtney James put the Lady Pirates ahead with a blast past goalie Taylor McLean of the Peacocks.
Saint Peter's (0-0-1) put a pair of goals on the board in the second half in the span of 105 seconds from Genesis Castrellon and Kelsey Knight to even the score.
For the game, Saint Peter's held an advantage on Hampton in shots (29-4) and shots on goal (10-3). Maya Andrews had eight saves in goal for Hampton with three of those coming in the two 10-minute overtime periods.
Head Coach Frank Hughes was pleased with the effort on Saturday and saw room for improvement as they head into Tuesday's 4pm clash at VMI (1-0). "The ladies played very organized in the back against a highly technical team," he said. "The heat got to us in the second half and we gave up the two goals off of mental lapses.  Even though we had a 2-0 halftime lead, we still have plenty of work to do on the attacking third of the field. Overall I am happy with the result with things to improve on heading to VMI."
