LEXINGTON, Va. – Homestanding Virginia Military Institute scored three goals in a span of almost four minutes in the opening stages of the first half on Tuesday as they defeated Hampton University 7-0 at Patchin Field.
The Keydets got on the board at the 12:41 mark on the first of two early tallies from Blake Cashin.  Lizzy Cotter put a header in the back of the net at the 14:14 mark to give VMI a 2-0 lead, while Cashin took a feed from Juliet Esnardo and scored at the 16:27 mark for a 3-0 leadl. VMI would add goals from Katelyn Lauziere (26:07) and Kristen Whitehurst (38:26) to take a 5-0 lead into halftime.
Maya Andrews recorded five saves in net for the Lady Pirates (0-1-1) who were outshot 25-3 in the game.  Her play in the net helped spear a defensive effort that helped hold the hosts to a pair of goals in the second half.  This was the second all-time contest with VMI after losing last year's inaugural meeting 16-0.
Hampton returns to action on Sunday in Clinton, S.C. when they face the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College at 1 pm.
